Rankings GuidelinesThis study ranks university finance departments and other institutions by the number of publications in the top four journals in finance:

• The Journal of Finance
  
• The Journal of Financial Economics
  
• The Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis
  
• The Review of Financial Studies
  

Additionally, the FMA-ASU rankings page also includes those articles which were published in a fifth journal, Financial Management.
Only refereed papers were included. Therefore, book reviews were excluded, as were the occasional non-refereed paper such as the presidential address to the American Finance Association. Further, all co-authored papers were allocated as follows. If the co-authors were at the same university, the university got credit for one publication. If the co-authors were at different universities, each university received credit for one publication. The methodology then simply proceeded by counting publications by faculty members at each university represented for the full year.
Detailed Guidelines

1. If the article is an extension of an author's dissertation which was completed while the author was at another school or organization: Give credit to school(s) or organization(s) where author is currently affiliated. We disregarded the place where the dissertation was completed.
   
2. If funding was provided by an organization or university program that is not the same place where author is currently employed: Give credit to school(s) or organization(s) where author is currently affiliated. We disregarded place which is the source of the funding.
   
3. If research was totally or partially completed at a university or organization that is not the author's regular employer: Give credit to school(s) or organization(s) where author is currently affiliated. We disregarded the place where the research was totally or partially completed.
   
4. If research was totally or partially completed at a university where the author is a visiting professor: Give credit to school(s) or organization(s) where author is currently affiliated. We disregarded the place where the author was a visiting professor.
   
5. If a single author is affiliated with two or more schools or organizations: All school(s) or organization(s) get ONE credit.
   
6. If multiple authors are at different schools or organizations: All school(s) or organization(s) get ONE credit.
   
7. If multiple authors are at the same school or organization: School or organization gets ONE credit.
   
8. If author(s) are affiliated with more than one department at a single university or organization: School or organization gets ONE credit.
