选D，请问 it 代指什么？为什么不选E。。感觉语法笔记上没讲清楚。

我想it是指代the number of chirps ,逻辑意思是chirps的数量可以作为一个近似的温度计。因为逗号后有and，表并列，所以用it就毫不疑问的指代前一个主句的主语。我这么解释有点虚，表达的不太好，不知道楼主能明白不？

it指代number,另外原句中表明 and后面的句子应该是和前面的句子并列的，而不是像E选项那样变成doing, E的句子结构变了就。。。我是这么理解的。。
