标题: 比较结构中than后面可以直接跟be动词吗
在OG12版 42页41题的未划线部分有这么一句话：

The standardization of weights for trade or taxation occurred many decades, if not centuries, earlier than was previously believed.

因为出现在未划线部分,这句话是没错误的。但我认为earlier than was previously believed，was接在than之后无法理解，觉得应该加上what或者其他。请路过的牛牛们指点！！THX

我觉得有可能是这样吧，

白勇语法书上说：比较的时候，比较从句的主语和主句主语相同时，可以省略。（因为这样既不会引起歧义，又简洁明了）

所以than后面省略了（the standardization of weights） was previously believed （to be occurred）。

至于后面的（to be occurred）为什么省略，我觉得就是因为原句没有别的谓语动词了，省略不会引起歧义吧，类似的还有 than expected、than estimated、than predicted 等等...
