Q16:
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
前面说的是costs accounted for,而than后面是用的be动词,不平行啊。
why b?

than后面的从句补全了应该是:than the costs acccounted for in any previous election, 因此,如果要用代词和助动词,也应该是:than they did in any previous election.
251. The gyrfalcon, an Arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970’s.
(A) extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than
(B) extinction; its numbers are now five times more than
(C) extinction, their numbers now fivefold what they were
(D) extinction, now with fivefold the numbers they had(A)
(E) extinction, now with numbers five times greater than
than后面的从句补全了应该是:than the costs acccounted for in any previous election, 因此,如果要用代词和助动词,也应该是:than they did in any previous election.
比较的对象不能改 the greater proportion that the proportion in any previous election, 因为是同类但是不同东西, 所以应该选than it 的答案; 只有A and E 可以选;考虑时态, E的线在完成式显然不合逻辑,所以我认为答案是A
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
A. a greater proportion than it was
B. a greater proportion than
C. a greater proportion than they have been
D. which is greater than was so
E. which is greater than it has been
如果B选项中than后面不补出it (proportion in any previous year) 不是就表示1992的proportion与之前的proportion都是同一个数据吗?
Rhod,
A 中 a greater propotion than it was in any previous elections 中的"was" 没有前面的动词作比较。
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, the greater costs than the costs in any previous election.
a greater proportion 是指代 (Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992)
A: Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
B: Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than in any previous election.
I think B is right.
Although Napoleon’s army entered Russia with far more supplies than they had in their previous campaigns, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
(A) they had in their previous campaigns
(B) their previous campaigns had had
(C) they had for any previous campaign
(D) in their previous campaigns(E)
(E) for any previous campaign
Thanks Rhod, I will digest all the discussions

Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
Although Napoleon’s army entered Russia with far more supplies than(it had had) for any previous campaign, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
Soaring television costs (accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992),a greater proportion than( television costs had been) in any previous election.

我认为这里的关键是than ever before和than ever before possible的差异,前者我们可以将was省略掉,后者,由于possible的存在造成was不能被省略。
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
A. it was 中的 it 指代‘proportion', 补全为:a greater proportion than the proportion was in any previous election.
89. A recent national study of the public schools shows that there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were four years ago.
(A) there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were
(B) there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were
(C) there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were
"four times as many as there were four year ago", 补出了”there were'.
30. What was as remarkable as the development of the compact disc has been the use of the new technology to revitalize, in better sound than was ever before possible, some of the classic recorded performances of the pre-LP era.
(A) What was as remarkable as the development of the compact disc
(B) The thing that was as remarkable as developing the compact disc
(C) No less remarkable than the development of the compact disc
(D) Developing the compact disc has been none the less remarkable than
(E) Development of the compact disc has been no less remarkable as
"in better sound than were ever before" 也补出了助动词。
Although Napoleon’s army entered Russia with far more supplies than they had in their previous campaigns, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
(A) they had in their previous campaigns
(B) their previous campaigns had had
(C) they had for any previous campaign
(D) in their previous campaigns(E)
(E) for any previous campaign
A错在it,应该用they指代television costs
Although Napoleon's army entered Russia with far more supplies than they had in their previous campaigns, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
(A) they had in their previous campaigns
(B) their previous campaigns had had
(C) they had for any previous campaign
(D)in their previous campaigns
(E) for any previous campaign
但是此题it refers to " propotion". 在看og 30
30. What was as remarkable as the development of the compact disc has been the use of the new technology to revitalize, in better sound than was ever before possible, some of the classic recorded performances of the pre-LP era. (A) What was as remarkable as the development of the compact disc (B) The thing that was as remarkable as developing the compact disc (C) No less remarkable than the development of the compact disc
我认为than 后省略的是 "sound". so it becomes " in better sound than the sound was ever before possible. 因为“in better sound than was ever before" 是realize 的状语,所以,省略的不可能是主句的主语(the use of the new technology to revitalize) 或是(the development of the compact disc )。因为省略的是“sound" , 状语结构中的一部分,所以was 要补出,但不知道为什么不用 "a better sound than it was ever before".
我觉得你的理解有偏差;
What was as remarkable as the development of the compact disc has been the use of the new technology to revitalize, in better sound than was ever before possible, some of the classic recorded performances of the pre-LP era.
(some of the classic recorded performances of the pre-LP era)(by using the new technology to revitalize) in better sound than ever before was possible.
leeon ah, I can't agree with you.
Please note that you've rewritten the OG 30 so that the origianl, discussed comparison is no longer an issue in your rewritten sentence. By deleting "revitalize", you've changed the structure of the sentence. Also, OG 30 doesnt mean "some of the classic recorded performances of the pre-LP era) was in better sound than was ever before" because the "was" doesn't agree with " the performances". So your interpretation is incorrect. Therefore, the omitting part in original sentence ( in better sound than was ever before) is not " some of the classic recorded performances" but " the sound".
What you think?
What was as remarkable as the development of the compact disc has been the use of the new technology to revitalize, in better sound than was ever before possible, some of the classic recorded performances of the pre-LP era.
(A) What was as remarkable as the development of the compact disc
(B) The thing that was as remarkable as developing the compact disc
(C) No less remarkable than the development of the compact disc
(D) Developing the compact disc has been none the less remarkable than
(E) Development of the compact disc has been no less remarkable as
Besides being wordy, the clauses beginning What was in A and The thing that was in B cause inconsistencies in verb tense: the use of the new technology cannot logically be described by both the present perfect has been and the past was. In B and D, developing the compact disc is not parallel to the use of new technology to revitalize ... performances; in C, the best answer, the noun development is parallel to use. The phrases none the less ... than in D and no less... as in E are unidiomatic; the correct form of expression, no less ... than, appears in C, the best choice.
如果改成sound better than ever before就能解决前面的问题。
1. A large rise in the number of housing starts in the coming year should boost new construction dollars by several billion dollars, making the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than five years ago.
(A) making the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than five years ago
(B) and make the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than five years ago
(C) making the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than it was five years ago
(D) to make the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than five years ago(C)
(E) in making the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than it as five years ago
支持选A。
better adj.
Comparative of good;
good的比较级形式;
What was as remarkable as the development of the compact disc has been the use of the new technology to revitalize, in better sound than (省略the sound)was ever before possible, some of the classic recorded performances of the pre-LP era.
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
I think B is better. In choice A, "was" is not the proper tense. Inspired by Leeon.
Soaring television costs (accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992),a greater proportion than( the proportion had been) in any previous election.
299. Florida will gain another quarter-million jobs this year alone, many of them in high-paying fields like electronics and banking, making the state’s economy far more diversified than ten years ago.
(A) high-paying fields like electronics and banking, making the state’s economy far more diversified than
(B) high-paying fields like electronics and banking, and making the state’s economy far more diversified than its economy
(C) high-paying fields such as electronics and banking, to make the state’s economy far more diversified than
(C)** high-paying fields such as electronics and banking, making the state’s economy far more diversified than
(D) such high-paying fields as electronics and banking, making the state’s economy far more diversified than it was
(E) such high-paying fields as electronics and banking, and make the state’s economy far more diversified than it was
I agree this point!
我选B,因为A中it 指代不清。
1. In 1990’s, there are more babies born by women over thirty years old than under it.
(A) than under it
(B) than were they under it
(C) than had been under it
(D) than were the babies(A)
(E) than those were under it
me too!
so I think choice(B) is the correct answer.
3.a greater proportion than it was=a proportion that is greater than it was
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than (it had been)in any previous election. it指代 proportion
OG198 Although Napoleon's army entered Russia with far more supplies than (supplies) for any previous campaign, it had provisions for only twenty-four days. If than is followed by a clause referring to army, the subject of that clause must be singular (it). Furthermore, the verb of that clause will need to be in the past perfect form (had had) because it refers to a time before the simple past of entered.
本题中:proportion指代more than half.
Og 81:
81. In 1973 mortgage payments represented twenty-one percent of an average thirty-year-old male's income; and forty-four percent in 1984.
(A) income; and forty-four percent in 1984
(B) income; in 1984 the figure was forty-four percent
(C) income, and in 1984 forty-four percent
(D) income, forty-four percent in 1984 was the figure
(E) income that rose to forty-four percent in 1984
因为it指代的不是costs而是指代more than half这个proportion.
The tense in C is not correct, should be
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than they had been in any previous election.
As what nosmoking explained, similar example can be found in OG 198.
Thus, B is a better choice.
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than (it had been)in any previous election. it指代 proportion (引自47楼)
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than the proportion Soaring television costs accounted for in any previous election.
B 对,
我觉得 a greater proportion than in any previous election.
a greater proportion than the proportion in any previous election.
support B.
Soaring television costs accounted for a greater proportion of the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992 than ... in any previous election.
1) they had been: they指代soaring television costs, had been表示发生在accounted之前
即直接in any previous election。
open to discussion!!
但省略掉的应该是they had accounted for proportions
Soaring costs accounted for a greater proportion than (they had accounted for proprtions) in any previous election.
OG198:Although Napoleon's army entered Russia with far more supplies than for any previous campaign, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
If than is followed by a clause referring to army, the subject of that clause must be singular (it). Furthermore, the verb of that clause will need to be in the past perfect form (had had) because it refers to a time before the simple past of entered.
If than is followed by a clause referring to costs, the subject of that clause must be plural (they). Furthermore, the verb of that clause will need to be in the past perfect form (had accounted for) because it refers to a time before the simple past of accounted for.
Although Napoleon's army entered Russia with far more supplies than (supplies) it had had for any previous campaign, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
1。Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than (the proportion) they had accounted for in any previous election.
2。Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than in any previous election.
open to discussion
错:(B) a 毫无疑问是A
错:rise and make the construction industry’s economic health much more robust
than five years ago
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, (costs accounted for) a greater proportion than (they were/had been) in any previous election.
a greater proportion than the proportion had been in any previous election
open to discussion...
错:(B) a 毫无疑问是A
错:rise and make the construction industry’s economic health much more robust
than five years ago
对:(C) a rise making the construction
industry’s economic health much more robust than it was five years ago
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it had been in any previous election.
A指代有歧义,IT可以是SPENDING 也可以是PROPOTION。

在THAN 后面也紧跟了 for any previous.......
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion costs accounted than the proportion of costs had had in any previous election.
Although Napoleon's army entered Russia with far more supplies than (supplies) it had had for any previous campaign, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.

2。Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than in any previous election.
同意!选B无疑。只是我同意省略的是(the proportion) they had accounted for

1. A large rise in the number of housing starts in the coming year should boost new construction dollars by several billion dollars, making the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than five years ago.

(D) to make the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than five years ago(C)
(E) in making the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than it as five years ago
A 中 a greater propotion than it was in any previous elections 中的"was" 没有前面的动词作比较。
可不可以这么理解:1992年,more than half the spending的这个propotion 比 any previous elections的propotion都大,那么was是就是正确的。在这里我觉得不能把was根 accounted for平行,was对应的应该是propotion而不是costs.
而且,根据ets出题的习惯,像这种than结构的题,一般是要在than后面加什么东西的,比如than they do in any previous eletion, than those of xxx in any previous elections。
I earn less than he does.
He has more time than I(have).

Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, (it was )a greater proportion than in any previous election.
Q16:
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
Soaring television costs accounted for a greater proportion in election of 1992 than (television costs had accounted for ) in any previous election
这道题的省略我觉得应是这样的:a greater proportion than(the proportion television costs accounted for)in any previous election
拿破仑那题是with more supply than (the supply it had had)for any previous campaign。
