标题: OG12 SC101 看一下~~OG为什么说when为什么放错地方了！

(B) An executive who is heavily committed to a course of action, especially one that worked well
in the past, makes missing signs of incipient trouble or misinterpreting ones likely when they do appear.

OG上说 the modifier when they do appear is misplaced.
不知道具体原因~~

同问~为什么语法笔记上说B的they无所指呢
这个句子里能用they指代的只有signs一个，其他名词都不可能。they的指代和状语从句的修饰对象没什么关系吧，除非代词指代有多个可能。
可是这只有一个可能啊，也符合逻辑。

我想了半天，觉得有一个说法说得通，就是B里面是

是an executive makes sth. likely这样怪怪的，缺少一个原因，为什么an executive makes sth. likely？表述的不是很清晰，设想一下，如果when they do appear改一下形式,放在句首——

When missing sighs do appear, an excutive who is heavily committed to a course of action, especially one that worked well in the past, makes sth. likely .这样是不是因果关系就清晰多了呢？就像E里面，逻辑关系其实就表述的很清楚。所以我觉得B的问题不在于语法什么的，在于谁表达得更好，个人浅见哈~

恩恩，我也认为B没有什么语法问题，也许OG想表达的意思就是要放在句首更idiom一点——暂时也没有想到更好的解释。

我想了一下，不知道这个解释能否帮助到你。其实也是你的回复给我启示~
之所以说B的when they do appear 放置得不对可能要改变下句式（比如放到句首）是因为这里的 they 就近指代ones，而ones只能指代sings不能指代 signs of incipient trouble.（所以是存在语法问题的）
而E中when they do appear 放置在句末， they和them同指代 sings of incipient trouble，指代正确，没有语法问题。
你思考的很深哦，让我回头来看这道题又有了启发。

B选项里when they do appear放在了likely后面，因此修饰的是makes missing signs of incipient trouble or misinterpreting ones likely整个成分，也即修饰的是makes，如果放到likely前面，就不会有修饰歧义，但是会让句子显得非常不自然（一个Likely挂在后面，很有修饰appear的歧义），依然是错句。
而E选项里misinterpret是动词，所以when they do appear能够仅修饰misinterpret。

参照E答案的话，我觉得B答案中的"when they do appear"应该放到"misinterpreting ones"之后，"likely"之前，因为这个时间状语只是修饰"misinterpreting ones"的，如果放到"likely"只够就变成既修饰"misinterpreting ones"又修饰"missing signs of incipient trouble"

IN B, "when they do appear " modifies makes.
in E, it modifies miss or misinterpret, so GMAC says that B is a misplaced modifier.

这个when they do appear 是放错地方了。原因是they指代不明。因为前面的ones 其实不是指再前面的signs of .... , ones 只能表明会misinterpret的那些signs。所以they是指ones （会被misinterpret的signs)还是指前面的会被miss的signs 呢，这就指代不明了。而如果将ones 替代them, 则都是指同一个signs of .... 所以后面的they指代是清晰的
