标题: OG12 137 平行问题(已解决)
Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples of the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living, often goes into decline after death, and never regains popularity again.
(A) often goes into decline after death, and never regains popularity again
(B) whose reputation declines after death and never regains its status again
(C) but whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status
(D) who declines in reputation after death and who never regained popularity again
(E) then has declined in reputation after death and never regained popularity
对于正确选项C,OG给的解释是:This sentense presents the proper logic while maintaining parallel structure ans consistent verb tense.
也就是说句子主体是JR and GM are composer who..., but whose.... OG认为这两个从句是平行的。
可是曼哈顿第四章却讲到,Parallel clauses should start with the same word.
Wrong: I want to retire to a place WHERE I can relax AND THAT has low taxes.
Right: I want to retire to a place WHERE I can relax AND WHERE the taxes are low.
而且那个著名的培训机构也说,从句并列,连接词要是一样的才可以。。
Wait A minute, B选项的解释还有这么一句话:
The two clauses are not parallel, lack a coordinating conjunction, and do not describe the same thing.

比如 i like pepsi but he likes cocacola, 这么说是没有错误的。
作者: 无敌可爱多 时间: 2011-7-20 14:54
The two clauses are not parallel, lack a coordinating conjunction, and do not describe the same thing.
个人认为这个解释说的是whose和之前没划线的部分。因为根据原句未划线部分推理, composer后面应该是一个并列结构的list,用来修饰composer。也就是XDF说的逗号逗号and结构的平行。

总是可爱多姐姐在帮我~哇哈哈。。在这么下去,你没帮一次我,我就去买一个可爱多吃好了。。。哈哈哈哈
我理解你1楼的意思,可是我不是那个问题啦~还米有那么笨~哈。我的意思就是composer who..., but whose ...这个结构和那个例子中place where... ,and where...这两个结构。
而且还有许多关于evidence的题目,都是evidence suggest that..., and that...这类要保证连接词一致。
我感觉,之所以会造成composer who..., but whose...这种结构就是因为B选项所说:These two caluses do not talk about the same thing. 而你像where还有that那个例子,都是在修饰先行词,并描述同一事物,从而要求连接词一致的。
我还需要例子来佐证这个说法到底对不对,目前这个想法是我猜的。。。
不过,谢谢可爱多姐姐!~继续讨论讨论这堆破问题!

为什么抵制啊~
我组织组织语言……恩。。
且看我刚刚从曼哈顿上摘抄到的一句话:Only clauses starting with the same word should be made parallel.
E.g:A mastodon carcass, which has been thawed only once, AND which is still fresh, is on display.
那这里C选项就是Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples of the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living, but whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status.
我就觉得那个who和whose不是same word不能平行啊。。

平行本质上讲究的是功能,而不是形式。whose和who引导的都是主语性从句,所以可以平行。
manhattan虽然权威,但即便是OG这样的官方材料也有疏漏的地方,语法的问题还是要从本质来找,比如为何不是同样的词就不能平行,其实词不同是表象,功能不同是本质。

with "but", "who" and "whose" are parallel, both refer to "the kind of composer";
without "but", "who" and "whose" can be ambiguous, "whose" maybe also refers to "living"

按照版主的这个解释,那么就是说曼哈顿中的那个错误的例子实际上应该就是对的了吗??
Wrong: I want to retire to a place WHERE I can relax AND THAT has low taxes.
Right: I want to retire to a place WHERE I can relax AND WHERE the taxes are low.
因为在上面这个错误的例子中where和that指代的都是相同的成分,即a place,同时都是定语从句,描述了这个place所持有的特性,唯一的不同就在于引导词不同及在从句中引导词指代成分所处的成分不同,一个是状语一个是主语。
如果这个例子是正确的话那么我们是不是就可以理解为只要两个从句的属性一样,即使引导词不同也可以平行。
如果我理解不对,上面的例子仍然是错误的话麻烦版主指正是因为什么原因错误的。
谢谢啦!

“who receives popular acclaim…” and “whose reputation declines…”是可以平行的,因为都修饰了 the kind of composer,功能平行。

正好看到这道题
The two clauses are not parallel, lack a coordinating conjunction, and do not describe the same thing.
感觉OG这个解释的意思是:
没有连词的话 whose reputation declines after death and never regains its status again是who receives popular acclaim while living从句的从句
也就是说whose修饰最近的名词acclaim,所以OG说not describe the same thing
个人见解,求拍砖。。

up 同样想问这个问题 两个从句都是主语性的就可平行,一个是状语性一个是主语性就不能平行对吗?
作者: zwhjzwhj 时间: 2012-7-23 19:38
这道题的疑问并没有解决啊,至少我看了没懂。
bat就明白啦。。。悟性真高啊。
怎么就解释了呢?
我的问题是:
1,C的句子结果太怪异了。刚开始应该是主谓宾吧,那么逗号后面该接从句了吧。却来个,but whose
这什么结构啊??哪有逗号+but+定语从句引导词的呢??实在无法理解啊。
2,B的解释。OG说The two clauses are not parallel, lack a coordinating conjunction,
如果想要who和whose两个定语从句平行,那么+逗号+but就行了??
3,but连接为什么前面要有逗号?
如果but连接两个并列的定语从句,who 和whose引导的两个定语从句,那样的话是不应该出现逗号的吧。

按照版主的这个解释,那么就是说曼哈顿中的那个错误的例子实际上应该就是对的了吗??Wrong: I want to ret ...
所以说这个帖子没有解决问题。
Manhattan在第五版避开了这个点。
用的例句如下,而且说明的语法点并不是从句引导词必须一致,而是定语从句的引导词(关系代词或关系副词)都要有。
Wrong: I want to retire to a place WHERE I can relax AND I pay low taxes.
Right: I want to retire to a place WHERE I can relax AND WHERE I pay low taxes.
之后Manhattan也说引导词(subordinators)不一定要一致(identical),然后给出例句:
Right: There are many people who speak english but whose parents do not.

同问啊
C选项比B选项多了一个but,
B的解释是“The two clauses are not parallel, lack a coordinating conjunction, and do not describe the same thing”
C却是“presents the proper logic while maintaining parallel structure and consistent verb tense”
多了个but就能平行了吗
作者: cdbgin009 时间: 2013-12-21 03:09
but前后是两个定语从句的平行,who和whose都指代都一个先行词,为什么不行呢?

ron的一个回复可能能帮助到你:
Q;Hi, I understand the parallelism concept in this exercise, but what I find confusing is the use of "but" after the comma because this usage suggests that we should look for a complete clause rather than a modifier.
A:this “rule” is not really a rule. it's an approximate guideline in most cases, but it's definitely not a strict rule.
often, the comma will be omitted when there are two complete clauses -- if those clauses are short enough to render the comma unnecessary.
also -- again quite often -- a comma will be included even if the structures are not complete clauses, especially if the structures are long enough to make the sentence essentially unreadable without the comma.
for instance:
i shut the windows and locked the doors --> this sentence doesn't need any additional punctuation.
i shut the windows so firmly that i would later have trouble opening them, and locked the doors using both the standard locks and the deadbolts --> these are not complete clauses, but the sentence is still written with the comma, because it's absolutely unreadable without the comma (try it yourself).
MOST IMPORTANTLY
PUNCTUATION IS NOT TESTED ON THIS EXAM!
don't bother with “rules” based on punctuation, because (a) gmac doesn't test them, and, more importantly, (b) the vast majority of them will not be hard rules.
the only time you'll want to mind punctuation at all is when it actually differentiates different structures: for instance, “no comma + -ing” is very different from “comma + -ing”.
but, those kinds of things aren't really punctuation issues -- they are issues concerning the resulting structures. for instance, the example i just mentioned would be a modifier issue, not really a punctuation issue.

我觉得是不是还是要根据句子的意思呢,who receives popular acclaim 与reputation declines明显就是两个opposite的状况,所以就but表示转折意思会更清楚吧。
