(D)正确,注意到了主谓一致;使用to do表示目的更加有效;用and连接句子,意思符合逻辑

(E)伴随状语使用错误,有作后置定语修饰temperature的歧义存在；possibly使用错误

看过很多帖子讨论这题不选择E因为ving可能做后置定语，修饰前面的名词。但是，如果理解成为，修饰前面整个句子，而不是仅仅某个词时，需要使用ving或者新的概括性名词，这样的用法，那么我认为E答案更完善。因为 the number of chirps per minute本身并不能说serve as a一个温度计，而我认为是the number 随着温度上下浮动这整个动作，才是真正的serve as a thermometer.

不知道这样的理解哪里错了呢？大家一起讨论一下吧。
