1. GWD21-Q1:

According to analysts, an alliance between three major personal computer companies and most of the nation’s largest local telephone companies would enable customers to receive internet data over regular telephone lines with speeds much higher than is currently possible.

A.with speeds much higher than is

B.with speeds that are much higher than are

C.at much higher speeds as are

D.at much higher speeds than that

E.at speeds much higher than are
偶选的是B；思路是这样的：
首先，B中than 后面有are因此应该主语比较，所以B是：with speeds that are much higher than （speeds）are 其中speed省略了。------ 清晰，即使that are不简洁
然后， E选项than 后面有are，同样应该是主语比较。但是找不到比较对象，因此歧义。具体来说
1）如果是主语an alliance 比较：at speeds much higher than （an alliance） are-------造成了，主谓不一致
2）有人说，at speeds （that are） much higher than （speeds） are ------说不通，按照og和prep中关于“比较省略考点”得思路，省略的前提是清晰。如果是that are的省略，造成了不清晰比较对象，因为第一印象应该是an alliance的省略，但是又说不通。相比之下B中虽然用了that are 但是清晰，无歧义。
类似的that are 为了清晰，没省略的例子，prep2-131中的that are。
3）有些解释说，因为at speed而不是with speed。我google了下，发现了N多with speed的说法。speed作为名词，表示一种伴随状态没什么不对。
例如：She acted with speed and efficiency. -------来自longman
Everyone was surprised by the speed with which the dispute was settled.
每个人都为这一争端解决得如此之快而感到吃惊。 -----来源金山词霸

总结: 该题BE比较的应该是清晰和简洁的层次问题，显然，应该清晰较简洁优选。

本人第一次做gwd套题，sc就错了这么一道，一激动，上来挑战下前辈的答案，见谅！哇哇！
欢迎大家讨论，跪等NN拍砖，指点思路哪里不对。
比较题是我sc中错误率最高的，这道题如果选E，我又晕了

为什么 B.with speeds that are much higher than are，你能判断 are 前面是省掉了 speed，那么 E 中.at speeds much higher than are， are 前面也是省略了speed啊，为什么你会被理解成省掉了an alliance 呢？想听听你的看法~ 你的附加题之所以选 C 不选 E 的原因，不是因为
small cars that are more fuel-efficient 优选于 more fuel-efficient small cars ，是因为E 选项改变了题意，题意是说制造商制造的 small cars 更能节油，如果是E的话，原意就变成了制造商的能生产更多的节油的 small cars。

你的附加题之所以选 C 不选 E 的原因，
----根据比较平行，than后边省略的是后边那个句子的主语，我就自然想到了前面句子的主语与其对应，an alliance或者speed这2个主语成分，但是an aliance说不通，就是speeds了。
但是，E中不是speeds，是因为speeds是介词宾语，具体是不是speeds （that are）much higher，省略结构中的主语，纯属猜想，而且我在做题时候，1分钟的时间内，我真的想不出是这个省略！B中的that指代的是speeds，构成了that（speeds）are much higher完整句子，清晰的表示出了speeds是主语。
不是因为
small cars that are more fuel-efficient 优选于 more fuel-efficient small cars ，是因为E 选项改变了题意，题意是说制造商制造的 small cars 更能节油，如果是E的话，原意就变成了制造商的能生产更多的节油的 small cars。
--------这个咱俩应该是没有异议，我想表达正是省略的前提是清晰! more fuel-efficient small cars, 可以有多种理解理解，所以不清晰，而that从句那个契合题意

我明白你的意思了，你是说speeds that are much higher 这样的结构才能让 speeds 成为这个结构的主语，这样后面省略的主语才没有歧义就是 speed，我不能说你的想法错，但是个人认为，with speed 虽然属于介词结构，但是后面可以直接进行比较，无需要把speed 放入主语地位才能做比较，纯属个人意见，好像做过介词中的名次比较中没有说要求把它非要弄成 that。。的形式啊。

你误解了第二题用that are是为了消除歧义。。第二题，make作制造解，则后面必须跟名词，就是说跟small car，that are 是定语从句，理所当然后面比较的对象是物，是small car。若make要作使得。。怎么样解，那么small car more fuel-efficient now than 这个than后面得比较状态，得有be动词，而几个选项之中都没有匹配的，所以make只能做第一种解释，选择C。

恩，我赞同没必要把介词宾语，弄成主语才可以比较。
但是，如果是介词宾语比较，又没有平行暗示出省略的是什么，我认为最好不省略，否则不清晰。
结合这题E选项：就是最好这样，at speeds much higher than speeds are

还有个问题，我一直在想E选项中than后边的are留着和不留啥区别？

1）因为与前面时态would，不同，所以留着？如果这样，总感觉是an alliance... would....than （an alliance） are....比较
2）因为，为了区别此处应该是speeds而不是an alliance的省略？貌似支持了我的想法
3) 省不省没区别！好像gmac又喜欢简洁
纠结，想听听MM jameshzd的看法

不好意思，可能是我没表述清楚！我想表达的是那个类似于a sizable wolf population与a sizable population of wolves 的区别。因为一堆形容词放在一个名词前面，而且又加个比较既more，所以不清晰。
可能我表达的越来越不清晰了

我是这样想的，之所以 E 没有把 speed 补上，是因为 gmac 觉得在这里不存在 an alliance 和 speed 的歧义，因为按逻辑意思，an alliance are currently possible 按逻辑来讲是讲不通的，我觉得有时候在逻辑意思上如果不存在歧义时，即使是对比的对象是主语，也可以不用在后面加上谓语动词来加以避免歧义。
但这里之所以加了 are，是因为去掉 are 后，后面 than currently possible 会有语法问题啊，我见过 than 后面接介词短语的，比如 Napolen's army entered Russia with far more supplies than for any previous campaign。但是than 后面直接加副词外加形容词应该是不合语法的。
