Is education the most important element to succeed foran individual in our society? While education does play a very important role in one’spersonal and career life, considering it as the factorthat most ensures success in one’s life undervaluesthe merits of some other issues which may influence a person’s lifetrack. Without a doubt, education is now becoming increasingly important, as it can help people to have a better understandingabout the society in a global perspective. Thanks to people’s awareness as wellas the huge amount of scholarship, a large proportion of young people areenjoying the higher education in universities. Take China’s education forexample. Thirty years ago, a young man with a high school degree in China wouldbe able to handle most of his work. He would be a star in any company orgovernment sector should he obtain a Bachelor’s degree. After thirty years, approximatelysix million students graduate from universities annually, most of whom are atleast familiar with one foreign language. With such language proficiency, manyof Chinese people are working on international business with clients all overthe globe. Education not only brings those Chinese people the ability to make aliving, but also help them to expand their reach from local hometowns to peopleall around the world. Not only education can bringa person the necessary knowledge to make a living, a systematic study can alsoequip a person with the ability to search for new knowledge by her/him-self. Withthe development of new technology, especially the internet, the world iscreating more information in one year than what it was creating in the entire20th century. A person should not expect to learn all the knowledge during theschool-year education, but he/she should more focus on the method to dig outmore knowledge when confronting new problems. Almost everyone is using Google,but not all people can use it same well. With the proper choice of keywords aswell as the proper analysis of the found results, people with the betterinformation searching ability may acquire new knowledge more efficiently. Thiswill lead to more updated knowledge, and to some extent, result in a higherpossibility to achieve personal success. However, while education ismore focused on the intellectual side, some other factors may also influence aperson’s life track. Interpersonal communication skills, social network andhonesty, all could somehow contribute to a person’s success. Take honesty as anexample. Bernard Madoff, the ex-SEC chairman, once a “successful” man, can forsure be considered as a person with wonderful education background. However, heconducted the Ponzi-scheme and caused billions of dollars of loss forinvestors. Due to his dishonesty, the once “successful” man will have to end uphis life in the jail.
In conclusion, education definitelycontributes a lot should one wish to succeed in our society. It equips a personwith the global view as well as the ability to search for more information whennecessary. However, simply considering education as the element that mostensures a person’s success neglects other factors, such as honesty, to a person’slife track.
