187. In one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, fought at Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862, four times as many Americans were killed as would later be killed on the beaches of Normandy during D-Day.

(A) Americans were killed as

(B) Americans were killed than

(C) Americans were killed than those who

(D) more Americans were killed as there

(E) more Americans were killed as those who

Key is A.

根据几个明显的错误，可以很快地到答案。可是我很想知道as...as 的

用法。如果A多加一个those, (A) Americans were killed as those, 是否更

好一些呢？什么情况应该补全啊？

"those" is superfluous, wordy and thus redundant here, "as" can act as a pronoun in this case. Remember this usage.

那么C中的those who为什么wordy? than也可以做代词? 那么许多than that/those 怎么解释?

当as......as同级比较时, 同主语不同谓语的情况, 多半省略主语......

像这边的four times as many Americans were killed as (Americans) would later be killed

但若是比较宾语时, 则需补出主语:

ex: David has half as many records now as I had last year. (这里则省宾语)

两个主语(DAVID和I)都不同,当然要清晰表达出来,所以不是"补出主语"的问题.

187题中可以省去"THOSE"或"AMERCIANS",我觉得与其句子结构有关,这是个被动句,没有宾语,所以省去的后面的主语并不会引起歧义(因为只能是AMERCIANS这个选择)

Is the "those" here also superfluous?

or it represents a different "independent instituations" , so it is not superfluous?

同问，不从语法，从语感说A加上those or those who好像更顺畅。

因为than之前是完整的主谓宾结构，如果省略those就不知道是比较主语还是宾语了，有歧义，所以这里的those不能省。而OG187，大家已经说的很清楚了，只有主语和谓语，省略不会有歧义。之前有个比较的“疱丁解牛”的帖子，总结得很不错，可以去看看！

同意。另外再补充一点，在as ... as 短语中，第一个as作副词，第二个as既可作连词，也可作介词。见朗曼上的例句：

▪ They want peace as much as we do. 连词

▪ Helen comes to visit me as often as she can. 连词

▪ I can't run as fast as I used to. 连词

▪ an old woman with hair as white as snow 介词

▪ Some of the doctors are paid almost twice as much as the nurses. 介词

▪ We work as hard as any other team in England. 介词

我觉得这里的those一定是错误的，因为those/this/these/that等词都是不能单独使用指代前面的名词的，后面必须加一个名词，如those apples，those of any other；同时加了those还会有阵亡的是同一批人的歧义。

个人愚见，请指正！
