In corporate purchasing,
competitive scrutiny is typically
limited to suppliers of items that are
Line directly related to end products.
(5) With “indirect” purchases (such as
computers, advertising, and legal
services), which are not directly
related to production, corporations
often favor “supplier partnerships”
(10) (arrangements in which the
purchaser forgoes the right to
pursue alternative suppliers), which
can inappropriately shelter suppliers
from rigorous competitive scrutiny
(15) that might afford the purchaser
economic leverage. There are two
independent variables—availability
of alternatives and ease of changing
suppliers—that companies should
(20) use to evaluate the feasibility of
subjecting suppliers of indirect
purchases to competitive scrutiny.
This can create four possible
situations.
(25) In Type 1 situations, there are
many alternatives and change is
relatively easy. Open pursuit of
alternatives—by frequent com-
petitive bidding, if possible—will
(30) likely yield the best results. In
Type 2 situations, where there
are many alternatives but change
is difficult—as for providers of
employee health-care benefits—it
(35) is important to continuously test
the market and use the results to
secure concessions from existing
suppliers. Alternatives provide a
credible threat to suppliers, even if
(40) the ability to switch is constrained.
In Type 3 situations, there ate few
alternatives, but the ability to switch
without difficulty creates a threat that
companies can use to negotiate
(45) concessions from existing suppliers.
In Type 4 situations, where there
are few alternatives and change
is difficult, partnerships may be
unavoidable.

Q35:
Which of the following best describes the relation of the second paragraph to the first?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q37:
According to the passage, which of the following factors distinguishes an indirect purchase from other purchases?
Q35, B is wrong because of "an explanation for the occurrence of a situation "
Q37, I agree with you.
Thanks coolgirl.
You confirm my answer on question 37. I make at least two mistakes, and now it seems that GWD's answer is wrong.
The relationship of the purchased item to the purchasing company’s end product,
后来发现在第一段括号内(arrangements in which the purchaser forgoes the right to pursue alternative suppliers), 其中forgo the right, 我觉得是不是觉得indirect不重要,所以才放弃。
Q36:
Which of the following can be inferred about supplier partnerships, as they are described in the passage?
文中第一段1-16行提到"directly relate to end of products"(4行direct purchasing ), "not directly related to prodcution"(7行)。 如果not directly relate to the end of prodcuts, 那就是indirect purchasing. 象答案D中说的relationship of the purchased item to the purchasing company's end product.
purchaser forgoes the right to
pursue alternative suppliers), which
can inappropriately shelter suppliers
from rigorous competitive scrutiny
(15) that might afford the purchaser

With “indirect” purchases (such as computers, advertising, and legal services), which are not directly related to production, corporations.....................
that means the relationship between indirect purchases and production is not directly, so surely D is right
37答案为d。
such as computers, advertising, and legal services
With “indirect” purchases (such as computers, advertising, and legal services), which are not directly related to production, corporations.....................
that means the relationship between indirect purchases and production is not directly, so surely D is right
首先GMAT阅读一定要在原文定位,E选项没有相关地方,排除;
D的意思我一直不太明白“The relationship of the purchased item to the purchasing company’s end product” 有什么relationship好分?
A The ability of the purchasing company to subject potential suppliers of the purchased item to competitive scrutiny
In corporate purchasing, competitive scrutiny is typically limited to suppliers of items that are directly related to end products,很像文章的答案诶。
文章第一句只是是说competitive scrutiny is typically limited to suppliers of items that are directly related to end products,但没讲suppliers of items that are directly related to end products就不用 supplier parnership了。
B是对的,因为:“supplier partnerships” (..)which can inappropriately shelter suppliers from rigorous competitive scrutiny that might afford the purchaser economic leverage.
There are two
independent variables—availability
of alternatives and ease of changing
suppliers—that companies should
(20) use to evaluate the feasibility of
subjecting suppliers of indirect
purchases to competitive scrutiny.
This can create four possible
situations.

According to the passage, which of the following factors distinguishes an indirect purchase from other purchases?

1、typically---directly related to end products (运用competitve scrutiny采购);
2、not directly related to production (favor “supplier partnerships”---避开competitve scrutiny采购)。
Type 1,2,3 situations --- by bidding or threat (infer: direct,采购策略-运用并受competitve scrutiny约束)。
Type 4 situations, … partnerships may be unavoidable.
Q35, B is wrong because of "an explanation for the occurrence of a
situation "
Q37, I agree with you.
“There are two
independent variables—availability
of alternatives and ease of changing
suppliers—that companies should
(20) use to evaluate”

We can find answer fr the text:
competitive scrutiny is typically limited to suppliers of items that are directly related to end products.
With “indirect” purchases (such as computers, advertising, and legal services), which are not directly related to production,
All mentions relationship to production or end products.
So my answer: D
Q35:
Which of the following best describes the relation of the second paragraph to the first?
I hold for B. 原文并没有application of a strategy
can inappropriately shelter suppliers
from rigorous competitive scrutiny
that might afford the purchaser
economic leverage

B,yinwei:

There are two
independent variables—availability
of alternatives and ease of changing
suppliers—that companies should
(20) use to evaluate the feasibility of
subjecting suppliers of indirect
purchases to competitive scrutiny.
36 Which of the following can be inferred about supplier partnerships, as they are described in the passage?
Which of the following can be inferred about supplier partnerships, as they are described in the passage?
B.They can result in purchasers paying more for goods and services than they would in a competitive-bidding situation.

can inappropriately shelter suppliers

(15) that might afford the purchaser
economic leverage

I agree with D.
一点愚见:37D中提到:to the purchasing company's end product.
