C项说的 awkard and wordy是指 to begin seriously to study.前面那个to与后面的动词不定式连用造成问题。 此外,我个人认为，除了OG提到的问题外，seriously放前放后都行,重点看begin to do(停下来做某事)和begin doing(开始做某事),这一区别。请NN们指正作者: wtylys 时间: 2011-7-27 10:10

A、我的看法是C选项为部分倒装：当Not until位于句首时，句子要倒装。其结构为：Not until+从句/表时间的词+助动词（情态动词）+主语+谓语。
还原后为：scholars and critics were not to begin seriously to study until almost 1900。问题出在那个were not to begin上，直接用didn't begin就可以了。所以og会说awkard and wordy。
B、第二个有点模糊了。好像凡是能同时接to do和doing的，to do 表示从新做过某事，doing表示继续从事原事情。
