先来解决alone和by one'sself的问题,C的问题出现在the number of trucks by themselves的中心词是number,单复数问题。错。

    A中the numbers,错。

    1914:car + truck = 469,000

    1929 :truck = 469,000*2

    1914:car + truck = 469,000

    1929 :truck = car*2

    She lives alone .
You shouldn't leave a child alone in the house.
My wife and I like to spend time alone together away from the kids.

    5. without including anything else

In Switzerland, 50,000 signatures on a petition, a bit over 1% of the current total of qualified voters, are enough to haul any new countrywide law before a vote of the whole people. Twice that number of signatures will put a brand-new idea for a law to the people's decision, even if parliament wants nothing to do with it.

the above sentence is drawn from this website :  http://www.bcinitiative.com/article3.htm

'of' here means 'to or away', in other word, 'from'.

so the original sentence attempts to express:

    a: ...the numbers 'from' trucks

    b: ...that number 'from' trucks

since 'that' refers to 469,000, also in B, using number rather than numbers. So B is better...

that不可能指代469,000啊,前面说的是a total of 469,000 car and truck, 后面是 the numbers of trucks,而且根据ets的习惯,出现新词的时候,偏重于选新词,so 我选c

B.that number=469,000 相当与倍数比较的sth is XXtimes that of sth else

in 1929 a number of trucks alone came off the assembly lines

in 1929 almost twice that number of trucks alone came off the assembly lines

almost twice that number of 是修饰trucks的。同样,如果改成almost twice the number of 也是可以的。

还是有一个疑惑,twice the number of 与twice that number of单独拿出来看有甚么区别啊?

    (1)by themselves在but 句中指trucks.

    故排除C.D.E

    PS:如果A中的numbers改成number,则A也和B一样对的。

    2
two times more, bigger, better etc than something else
    twice the size/number/rate/amount etc --是一个固定搭配

an area twice the size of Britain

Arkansas, with twice the population and twice the number of cases, had five times as many deaths.

His studies show that stocks tend to climb more than twice the rate of the market after a positive earnings surprise.

In general, as already described, corrections will be twice the number of degrees that the aircraft is off the desired track.

In some areas, she says, food is being shared among twice the number of people it was intended for.

It follows that their demand for bank deposits is also growing at twice the rate of growth of nominal income.

Lemons contain twice the amount of vitamin C as oranges, as well as valuable B vitamins.

The lake will cover 1, 400 surface acres when full, roughly twice the size of San Pablo Reservoir near Orinda.

    ---longman

In 1914 a total of 469,000 cars and trucks were produced in the United States, but in 1929 almost twice

that number of trucks alone came off the assembly lines

大家一直争论的twice the number of 和此处twice that number of  并不是一个意思。

A, twice the number of B... 即A 是B的两倍, 如果按照这个意思走的话,本题的后半句就应该是, but in 1929 trucks alone, almost twice the number of cars and trucks in 1914, came off the assembly lines.

而此处"twice that number of "trucks “相当于"a certain number of " trucks 的意思,只是certain number 刚好等于469,000的两倍。

    B.   that number of trucks alone

    C.   the number of trucks by themselves

    B,C区别除了the与that, alone修饰that number of trucks,但是by themselves修饰trucks,重心转变,句意转变。

I think that "alone" modifies "trucks" in the original sentense...but alone seems to be more succinct than "by themselves"...it's not a question of the switched emphasis of the sentense...but a question of a more idiomatic and accurate expression--"alone" or "by themselves". Partially agree that "by themselves" has a different meaning from "alone".

其次,twice the number固然是一种习惯用语,但twice as many XX更是一个习惯用语,用于表示两倍多,在google里有大量例句,并没有跟随as XX,只用了twice as many,美国传统词典有一个单独的例句就是twice as many表示两倍。 如此一来,D选项的but in 1929 almost twice as many trucks themselves came off the assembly lines也能解释的通了。

先来解决alone和by one'sself的问题,C的问题出现在the number of trucks by themselves的中心词是number,单复数问题。错。

    A中the numbers,错。

    1914:car + truck = 469,000

    1929 :truck = 469,000*2

    1914:car + truck = 469,000

    1929 :truck = car*2

    1929 :truck = car*2

第一题numbers of 和the都是修饰trucks, numbers of 表许多的意思。 主语是trucks,这也能解释是trucks came off the assembly lines. 而不是number came off the assembly lines.

    (1)by themselves在but 句中指trucks.

    故排除C.D.E

    PS:如果A中的numbers改成number,则A也和B一样对的。

    我也觉得twice as many+n.(pl.)
