1. The cameras of the Voyager II spacecraft detected six small, previously unseen moons circling Uranus, which doubles to twelve the number of satellites now known as orbiting the distant planet.
(A) which doubles to twelve the number of satellites now known as orbiting
(B) doubling to twelve the number of satellites now known to orbit
(C) which doubles to twelve the number of satellites now known in orbit around
(D) doubling to twelve the number of satellites now known as orbiting(B)
(E) which doubles to twelve the number of satellites now known that orbit

1B 2 A
twice the number of something

当然选B,that number 指代469,000,请问the number 指什么?
m-w:
came off :intransitive senses
1 a : to acquit oneself : FARE *came off well in the contest* b : APPEAR, SEEM
2 : SUCCEED *a television series that never came off?TV Guide*
3 : HAPPEN, OCCUR
transitive senses : to have recently completed or recovered from *coming off a good year*
当然选B,that number 指代469,000,请问the number 指什么?
用google查,没有twice that number这种表达法,查出来的都是twice the number

852.There are more than forty newspapers published in the cities of Kerala, a state on the
(A) which reflects
(B) and that number reflects(best)
(C) which reflect
(D) that number reflects
(E) that reflects

Longman:
alone有一个意思是without including anything else
例子是The case will cost thousands of pounds in legal fees alone

先来解决alone和by one'sself的问题,C的问题出现在the number of trucks by themselves的中心词是number,单复数问题。错。
A中the numbers,错。
1929 :truck = 469,000*2
1929 :truck = car*2
the number of trucks by themselves的中心词是number单复数问题。
查google:The number by themselves is a little misleading.
查了google:的确有“The number by themselves is" a little misleading。
In 1993, there were 189.4 million vehicles registered nationwide, compared with 181.3 million in 1988, and 142.1 million in 1977. The number of trucks alone mushroomed by 40 percent between 1977 and 1988.
反身代词有以下常见搭配:by oneself(=alone)独自,靠自己
1.C (number should be single, do not use "that")
2.B, because A is not parallel and C/D/E is duplicated in meaning(of and 's).
2.B, because A is not parallel and C/D/E is duplicated in meaning(of and 's).
Choice B is obviously wrong, because the verb "were" does not agree with "the metabolism".

1. if you are alone in a place, there is no one with you synonym by yourself
She lives alone .
You shouldn't leave a child alone in the house.
My wife and I like to spend time alone together away from the kids.
5. without including anything else
The case will cost thousands of pounds in legal fees alone.

I have googled the usage of "twice that number of ....", I copied the result here, it seems it is justified.
In Switzerland, 50,000 signatures on a petition, a bit over 1% of the current total of qualified voters, are enough to haul any new countrywide law before a vote of the whole people. Twice that number of signatures will put a brand-new idea for a law to the people's decision, even if parliament wants nothing to do with it.
the above sentence is drawn from this website : http://www.bcinitiative.com/article3.htm
'of' here means 'to or away', in other word, 'from'.
so the original sentence attempts to express:
a: ...the numbers 'from' trucks
b: ...that number 'from' trucks
since 'that' refers to 469,000, also in B, using number rather than numbers. So B is better...
that不可能指代469,000啊,前面说的是a total of 469,000 car and truck, 后面是 the numbers of trucks,而且根据ets的习惯,出现新词的时候,偏重于选新词,so 我选c
In
B.that number=469,000 相当与倍数比较的sth is XXtimes that of sth else
Some scientists contend that many species of dinosaur had a metabolism more like a warm-blooded mammal’s than a cold-blooded reptile’s.
B.that the metabolism of many dinosaur species were more like
alone=by oneself 是 sb do sth alone= sb do sth by oneself
In 1914 a total of 469,000 cars and trucks were produced in the United States, but in 1929 almost twice the numbers of tucks alone came off the assembly lines.

我是新人;我开始也选了C,仔细想了一下,还是选B; C有逻辑错误;
C的中心词the number不能下线;B的中心词trucks才能搭配;that number这里是修饰成分,与the number 不一样;

I am sure this is not a GMAT question not even close .I am sure this is not a GMAT question not even close ."
in 1929 a number of trucks alone came off the assembly lines
in 1929 almost twice that number of trucks alone came off the assembly lines
almost twice that number of 是修饰trucks的。同样,如果改成almost twice the number of 也是可以的。
(1)by themselves在but 句中指trucks.
故排除C.D.E
PS:如果A中的numbers改成number,则A也和B一样对的。
2
two times more, bigger, better etc than something else
twice the size/number/rate/amount etc --是一个固定搭配
an area twice the size of Britain
Arkansas, with twice the population and twice the number of cases, had five times as many deaths.
His studies show that stocks tend to climb more than twice the rate of the market after a positive earnings surprise.
In general, as already described, corrections will be twice the number of degrees that the aircraft is off the desired track.
In some areas, she says, food is being shared among twice the number of people it was intended for.
It follows that their demand for bank deposits is also growing at twice the rate of growth of nominal income.
Lemons contain twice the amount of vitamin C as oranges, as well as valuable B vitamins.
The lake will cover 1, 400 surface acres when full, roughly twice the size of San Pablo Reservoir near Orinda.
---longman
In
that number of trucks alone came off the assembly lines
大家一直争论的twice the number of 和此处twice that number of 并不是一个意思。
A, twice the number of B... 即A 是B的两倍, 如果按照这个意思走的话,本题的后半句就应该是, but in 1929 trucks alone, almost twice the number of cars and trucks in 1914, came off the assembly lines.
而此处"twice that number of "trucks “相当于"a certain number of " trucks 的意思,只是certain number 刚好等于469,000的两倍。

B. that number of trucks alone
C. the number of trucks by themselves
B,C区别除了the与that, alone修饰that number of trucks,但是by themselves修饰trucks,重心转变,句意转变。
B. that number of trucks alone
C. the number of trucks by themselves

up!!
B. that number of trucks alone
C. the number of trucks by themselves
B,C区别除了the与that, alone修饰that number of trucks,但是by themselves修饰trucks,重心转变,句意转变。
I think that "alone" modifies "trucks" in the original sentense...but alone seems to be more succinct than "by themselves"...it's not a question of the switched emphasis of the sentense...but a question of a more idiomatic and accurate expression--"alone" or "by themselves". Partially agree that "by themselves" has a different meaning from "alone".
感觉选项A应该是 the number of trunks alone
其次,twice the number固然是一种习惯用语,但twice as many XX更是一个习惯用语,用于表示两倍多,在google里有大量例句,并没有跟随as XX,只用了twice as many,美国传统词典有一个单独的例句就是twice as many表示两倍。 如此一来,D选项的but in 1929 almost twice as many trucks themselves came off the assembly lines也能解释的通了。

Marvellous, fully agree
晕
就记着是twice of that number of trucks alone came off the assembly line得了……
twice the number of 我觉得是习惯用法吧

第一题numbers of 和the都是修饰trucks, numbers of 表许多的意思。 主语是trucks,这也能解释是trucks came off the assembly lines. 而不是number came off the assembly lines.

这个that number是指代 a total of 469,000 cars and trucks

Agree
我也觉得twice as many+n.(pl.)
