When it comes to the issue that whether technology isolates people or it helps to make people more united, some people may stick to the point that people are getting increasingly indifferent to each other as technology develops. However, I am more inclined to the point that technology helps human beings to know each other better, to communicate to a deeper level and to bring each other closer.
To begin with, the main reason for my propensity is the reason that technology has changed our way of communication. People had transferred from writing letters to distant lovers to making phone calls when Bell invented telephones. Companies e-mail documents to foreign business partners rather than telegram them when Internet was expanding all over the world. Everyone nowadays is getting to know the news around the world instantly, correctly and completely. All these changes have brought everyone, regardless of race, religion, skin color or gender, increasingly closer. That is to say technology brings us together rather than separates us. This can be aptly exemplified by the following case. Facebook is a social networking society, in which people have their own pages to show their interests, ideas or even emotions. The users of facebook can meet people from the same school or city. Consequently, people who used to be strangers get to know each other and become friends. They share interests, happiness, sorrow, ideas and thoughts. Therefore, the world becomes smaller and everyone gets closer.
Of equal importance is the fact that technology can serve as a crucial factor to cut down cost, making it affordable for people to purchase for communication tools which were previously too expensive to buy. To illustrate this, I would like to take my personal experience for example. I began to study out of my home when I entered middle school. At that time, the only way I can get in touch with my parents was to use the public phone calls. Consequently, I had to wait for a long time to make the phone call because everyone around was the same as me. So, I could only make one phone call a week because if I made two or more, there would be limited time for me to study. But now, because of the technology in cell phone making develops, the cell phone price is acceptable and I have my own cell phone. Thus, I can call my parents and friends anytime I want and can also text them. Besides, not only cell phones are cheaper, but also computers, the access to Internet and so forth have witnessed a decrease in price. Accordingly, technology allows people to afford for closer communication.
Admittedly, technology can also isolate people from each other. For example, it is not uncommon in China or even around the world that increasing number of teenagers has been addicted to Internet based games. They spend day and night sitting in front of computer, eating fast food and seldom talking to parents or friends. Thus, it is no exaggeration to say that technology has ruined them, both mentally and physically. However, the merits that technology brings to us overshadow its risks. Therefore, I reinforce my view that technology helps us to bring us together more than it separates us.
