In 1914 a total of 469,000 cars and trucks were produced in the United States, but in 1929 almost twice the numbers of trucks alone came off the assembly lines.
A.   the numbers of trucks alone
B.   that number of trucks alone
C.   the number of trucks by themselves
D.   as many trucks themselves
E.   as many trucks by themselves

本题答案是B ，我选的是D

当时做题是这样分析的，后面but引导的句子，came off是谓语，因此主语肯定是trucks，因为数字(number)不能came off 生产线。所以直接排除了A B C 因为前三个都是用of trucks来修饰number的，因此主语是number而不是trucks。
然后D和E中twice as many trucks ,之前prep提到过as many指代前面相同的数字，这里我理解就是指469,000。twice副词，主语就是trucks而不是number了，所以but后面的句子就相当于469000 x 2辆卡车从生产线下线，也可以与前面句子建立联系。
最后D和E比较，by themselves不符合，就选了D......

搜索了论坛之前的讨论，也发现大家现在已经同意came off是but后面句子的谓语了，那么请问B选项的主语其实是number,接谓语came off 我还是觉得不太妥吧。因为真正考试时候时间紧迫，我第一反应就会排出A B C....
请NN解惑！

想问下ae版主，that number of是不是像a number of一样，都是of之后的N作SUB啊？

同问，as many不是可以指代前面的数字吗，之前给的例句是They spent 5 days in the USA and visited as many cities. 为什么这题不行，是不能用在倍数后面吗？

这里很trick:
通常来说介词短语，主语都是介词前面的。
比如a mix of milk and coffee is not hard to make, 主语：a mix
but!!! 数量介词短语(quantity phrase), 主语是看后面的！
类似的还有one of/ some of/many of/
