Which one of the following, if true, most helps to explain the discrepant findings of the soil scientists and the home gardeners? a. the findings of soil scientists who are employed by fertilizer manufacturers do not differ widely from those of scientists who employed by the government or by universities. b. compost used in research projects is usually made from leaves and grass clippings only, whereas compost used in home gardens is generally made from a wide variety of ingredients. c. most plants grown in home gardens and in scientists' test plots need a favorable soil structure, as well as essential nutrients, in order to thrive. d. the soil in test plots, before it is adjusted in the course of experiments, tends to contain about the same quantities of plant nutrients as does soil in home gardens to which no compost or fertilizer has been added. e. some of the varieties of plants grown by home gardeners require greater quantities of nutirents in order to be healthy than do the varieties of plants generally grown by the soil scientists in tes plots. 答案是B. 我的个人理解：原文里说compost对soil structure有用，但是没有large enough的nutrient, which is essential for plant growth来代替fertilizer. 但是，很多home gardeners发现,在只有compost的soil里，尽管缺少nutrient,植物仍然可以healthy和highly productive. 题目要求我们解释这个discrepant findings。再看选项之前，我推测，是一些其他原因导致, 像是土壤里有其他可以提供nutrient的物质。可读完五个选项，发现没有。 A里的government, universities是无关选项，排除. C在说一个fact,无关，排除。D说，在没放compost或是fertilizer之前，test plots和home gardens的nutrient含量是一样的，也就是说排除了他因。因此无法解释现象，排除。E, 一些home gardeners的plants需要更多的nutirents相对test plot而言。此选项更加无法解释现象，如果是反过来说的话就可以解释。剩下B。B的意思我大概明白，但就是有一点不是很清晰，此选项imply, leaves and grass clippings代表少的nutrients，而a wide variety of ingredients代表较多的nutrients，因此解释现象，但是这两个assumptions在文中都没有明确讲到，我们如何可以判定这个关系呢？有些迷茫，也可能是我的切入点不对。哪位大大指点一下小弟。。。作者: sdcar2010 时间: 2011-4-28 08:47
Easy. The compost used in research is not the same compost used by gardeners. Therefore both statements could be right if B is true.
