In 1914 a total of469,000 cars and trucks were produced in the United States, but in 1929 almosttwice the numbers of trucks alone came off the assembly lines.
A. the numbers of trucks alone
B. that number of trucks alone
C. the number of trucks by themselves
D. as manytrucks themselves (B)
E. as many trucks by themselves

句中的but 做什么成分？是连词？ or ....
这是什么句子啊？不平行，不对称的，真不好看

连词。一般看几个分句是看谓语动词数的：前面分句的谓语动词是were produced，后面分句的谓语动词是came off。
确实前后主被动不平行，但没办法...GMAT单方面强迫我们，我们只能从之--前后主被动不平行再难看也是可以接受的。

我说呢，怎么我看着这么别扭
08笔记上说是过去分词修饰trucks，怎么看也不对啊！
B. Correct；came off作过去分词修饰trucks；that number指代前面总和的469000，如果是the number，没有指代对象，似乎说是the number of trucks
另外came怎么会是过去分词呢？
