clients' misconduct stemmed from a reaction to
something ingested, but in attributing criminal or
delinquent behavior to some food allergy, the
perpetrators are in effect told that they are not
responsible for their actions.

perpetrators作为attribute的动作发出者不合理，需要Defense attorneys来行使这个动作。所以attribute描述的是attorneys.

那是不是出现了but，but后面的句子才是一个整体，所以原文the perpetrators才是but这个句子的subject对吧？

求这句话的解释啊~~

如果直接翻译成：
“辩护律师有时声称他们的当事人的过失行为是由摄入的一些东西引起的，但是如果罪行或过失行为都归因于对食物的过敏反应的话，行凶者实际上被认为是不用为他们的行为负责。”

那个“但是”在句子中的逻辑不通嘛，我觉得把“但是”换成“因为”逻辑才顺呀，变成
“辩护律师有时声称他们的当事人的过失行为是由摄入的一些东西引起的，因为如果罪行或过失行为都归因于对食物的过敏反应的话，行凶者实际上被认为是不用为他们的行为负责。”

而且弱弱的问一句，为什么由modifying phrase改成从句后，主语就是Defense attorneys了啊。。。

固定介词搭配 allergy to some food
but 作为连词，应该连接两个句子
in attributing应该修饰Defense attorneys，却不能跨过一个but去修饰
原句状态下，in attributing修饰的是perpetrators
所以改成B选项，消除了misplaced modifier
