211. The period when the great painted caves at Lascaux and Altamira were occupied by Upper Paleolithic people has been established by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine are the reason for their decoration, the use to which primitive people put the caves, and the meaning of the magnificently depicted animals.

The best answer is B. But I donot agree. I think that "what is much more difficult to determine is "should be "what are much more difficult to determine are", since three things-- the reason, the use and the meaning are difficult to determine. So, no answer is correct. Who would like to explain more to me? Thank you for your help.

名词性从句做主语，谓语通常为单数。

比如：What I am most interested in is American movies．

但是，OG211也可被改为‘what are much more difficult to determine are’，因为这个选择没有出现在选项中，所以B是优选；另外，从本题看来，ETS更倾向于用单数。

OG211解释:

Two instances of subject-verb agreement must be observed in this sentence: The period... has been established and what is much more difficult to determine... is. Both clauses have singular subjects and must have singular verbs.

也就是说ETS认为 What is difficult to understand 是singular subjects, 所以后面接singular verbs

冒昧的问下大家，有没有见过what are...做主语的呢？比如说what are difficult to understand，这时还是当作单数主语吗？

是不是这样看, 就不可能用are了啊?

这样XDF的怎么理解啊?

刚查了下COLLINS COBUILD的《英语语法大全》，上面说:

常将what从句至于is或was之前，说明要谈的是什么事情。

What I need is a lawyer.
What you have to do is to choose five companies to invest in.

不过没有例句是宾语一大堆东西的..
