Q1:
During her presidency of the short-lived Woman’s State Temperance Society (1852-1853), Elizabeth Cady Stanton, as she was a staunch advocate of liberalized divorce laws, scandalized many of her most ardent supporters in her suggestion that drunkenness should be made sufficient cause for divorce.
除了should 和being,in和by的错误外,AB中as 引导从句为什么错?
7.A recent review of pay scales indicates that CEO’s now earn an average of 419 times more pay than blue-collar workers, compared to a ratio of 42 times in 1980.

Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
DE which refers to spending, spending is greater was so(行为)错,E it refers to spending in the presidential campaign of 1992
A greater proportion
3. more than half
Q16:Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
Choice C is incorrect, because been has no antecedent. Furthermore, if for 1992 the costs already accounted for more than half the spending, in an election that happened before that of 1992, it is impossible to use the perfect have been.

我觉得应该是选A吧?it 指代前面那个more than half的比例.was过去时,表the previous election.

Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992感觉做more than half这个比例的同位语比较合适,Jevno说的

No.16
如果指代MORE THAN HALF的话, 答案就是A.
记得OG有一题, sendiments from Baltic Sea, findings consistent with the growth of industrial activity in the area
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
I hate to say so, but I think in choice A it was should be it had been since it refers to sth that had happened before the costs accounted for more than half..

I'll vote for B. In choice A, the logic subject of "compared to a ratio..." may be CEO's, leading to an illogical comparation between people (CEO's ) and a ratio. In B, the comparation is between a ratio and 42times, more clearly and logically.

198. Although Napoleon’s army entered Russia with far more supplies than they had in their previous campaigns, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
(A) they had in their previous campaigns
(B) their previous campaigns had had
(C) they had for any previous campaign
(D) in their previous campaigns(E)
(E) for any previous campaign
(1) If than is followed by a clause referring to army, the subject of that clause must be singular (it). (2)Furthermore, the verb of that clause will need to be in the past perfect form (had had) because it refers to a time before the simple past of entered. (3)Finally, the preposition for is more precise than in because supplies are gathered for an upcoming campaign. Choices A and C incorrectly use the plural they and the simple past had. Moreover, A uses the less precise in. Choices D and E wisely dispense with the full clause and use a simple prepositional phrase. D, however, uses the imprecise in and the plural their. Only E, the best choice, avoids all the errors mentioned above
as 的用法

我不太明白A中的compared to.. 怎么它想用compare to就用compare to了?

For compare with vs compare t I agree with you7.A recent review of pay scales indicates that CEO’s now earn an average of 419 times more pay than blue-collar workers, compared to a ratio of 42 times in 1980.
我觉得compared to a ratio of 42 times -->是在比较一个比例ratio,而如果compared to a ratio修饰前面整个句子的话,那么是拿the ratio in 1980和前面什么比较呢?
A recent review of pay scales indicates that CEO’s now earn an average of 419 times more pay than blue-collar workers, compared to a ratio of 42 times in 1980.
我还是觉得A中的compared to...
又看了B,是不是错在a ratio that compares to 的that compares上啊?因为compare A to B.--> A is compared to B. 所以B如果改成 , a ratio compared to 42 times,就对吧?

I think your idea carefully. I may change my mind now.
Sentence, compared..(gerund phrase is awkward and will confuse the actual meaning)
compared... sentence (logical subject is subject of sentence)
Thanks Juan. I do learn a lot from you.
A ratio .... is more accurate the denotes the comparison objects.

38. Scientists have observed large concentrations of heavy-metal deposits in the upper twenty centimeters of Baltic Sea sediments, which are consistent with the growth of industrial activity there.
(A) Baltic Sea sediments, which are consistent with the growth of industrial activity there
(B) Baltic Sea sediments, where the growth of industrial activity is consistent with these findings
(C) Baltic Sea sediments, findings consistent with its growth of industrial activity
(D) sediments from the Baltic Sea, findings consistent with the growth of industrial activity in the area(D)
(E) sediments from the Baltic Sea, consistent with the growth of industrial activity there
All of the choices but D contain ambiguities. In A and B the words which and where appear to refer to sediments, and in E it is not clear what consistent describes. In A, C, and E, there is no logical place to which there or its could refer. In D, the best choice, the phrase sediments from the Baltic Sea tells where the sediments originate, findings provides a noun for consistent to modify, and in the area clearly identifies where the industrial activity is growing.

A recent review of pay scales indicates that CEO’s now earn an average of 419 times more pay than blue-collar workers, compared to a ratio of 42 times in 1980.
1.an average of 419 times more pay than..读起来awkward, 如果用average修饰pay则不能把两者分开,应该是an average pay of more than 419 times,否则就应该是on average a pay of more than 419 times, 尽管这样在这两个名词结构后面再跟上比较对象the pay(或者that) of bluecollar workers也远没有直接采用动词earn more than 419 times the pay...简洁明了;
2.A选项than的后方应该补出do或者起码也是that of, 否则有歧义之嫌,因为前方没有blue-collar workers的比较对象;
3. compared to a ratio..的问题,前方同样没有合适的比较对象,而修饰workers不合逻辑;
我原先prefer B.可我又觉得B中的a ratio that compares... 要是改成a ratio compared to...

C. in being a staunch advocate for liberalized divorce laws, had scandalized many of her most ardent supporters with the suggestion of drunkenness being
D. a staunch advocate of liberalized divorce laws, scandalized many of her most ardent supporters by suggesting that drunkenness be
E. a staunch advocate of liberalized divorce laws, she scandalized many of her most ardent supporters in suggesting that drunkenness should be
7.A recent review of pay scales indicates that CEO’s now earn an average of 419 times more pay than blue-collar workers, compared to a ratio of 42 times in 1980.
A. that CEO’s now earn an average of 419 times more pay than blue-collar workers, compared to a ratio of 42 times
B. that, on average, CEO’s now earn 419 times the pay of blue-collar workers, a ratio that compares to 42 times
C. that, on average, CEO’s now earn 419 times the pay of blue-collar workers, as compared to 42 times their pay, the ratio
D. CEO’s who now earn on average 419 times more pay than blue-collar workers, as compared to 42 times their pay, the ratio
E. CEO’s now earning an average of 419 times the pay of blue-collar workers, compared to the ratio of 42 times
Q16:
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
A. a greater proportion than it was
B. a greater proportion than比较错误
C. a greater proportion than they have been
A的it和C的they没有指代对象。 (This proportion is) or (more than half the spending is) a greater proportion than (the proportion) in any previous election.
注意:it是指代,即使it明白无误的指向more than half the spending ,A就更加肯定是错的,不能说more than half the spending in any previous election。

it我认为指得是proportion,比较赞同mariezhu的观点,如果it存在似乎had been要好。我好象在大全中见过,a greater proportion than it was 这种句型,只不过后面不是in any previous,可惜现在没找到。

1. I think the correct one should be
a ratio of sth
not a ratio that
2. on average modified the clause, not the times of pay==> changed the meaning
3. as compared to 42 times their pay, the ratio
the wording here is confusing
I still prefer choice A.

而A中compared to...

然后,在a中,that CEO’s now earn an average of 419 times more pay than blue-collar workers, compared to a ratio of 42 times ,这句话的意思是现在ceo平均比蓝领的多赚419倍的工资,就是说ceo平均工资是蓝领的420倍
CEO’s now earn 419 times the pay of blue-collar workers, 这里 ceo 是在和 pay of blue-collar workers作比较,所以错了。
7.A recent review of pay scales indicates that CEO’s now earn an average of 419 times more pay than blue-collar workers, compared to a ratio of 42 times in 1980.
应该是B对,只有B可能,a ratio that同位语避免了别的选项(as) compared to找主语(review,CEOs,blue collar workers)的歧义 。
CEOs Now Earn 419 Times The Pay Of Average Workers
Union workers earn an average of $155 (or 33 percent) more each week than non-union workers
我认为an average of 后接具体钱数比较好,象A接的是个倍数,意思表达感觉不清,an average of 419 times more pay ,pay是谁的pay/pay到底是多少。
