Wait listed by Yale
Yale suggested wait listed candidates to (1) retake GMAT, (2) clarify career goals and (3) submit a letter of interest. I am especially not sure if I should retake GMAT... Please give me some advices!!

My Background: GPA 3.6 / GMAT 700 (Q49 V37 AWA6.0); 1 yr big 4 audit + 3.5 yrs commercial banking from management trainee; processing CPA license; CFA L2 candidate this June.

Looking forward to hearing from lovely CDers

Maybe at least consider retaking GMAT. If possible, do all three.

Thanks for your prompt reply!

I plan to do (2) and (3)... but not sure if I should retake GMAT because I doubt whether I can do better..

By the way, for additional recommendations, should I seek more from work or from ECA? (or any other suggestions?)

Yale,so thoughtful!

For recommendations, seek for a balance. If you have obtained two from work, get the additional one from ECA. I only submitted two from work. I guess most applicants do. Not sure how much a letter from ECA would help in this case.

Maybe at least consider retaking GMAT. If possible, do all three.

GMAT is a hard factor, don't be not confident, just get out weekends/after-work weekdays wholy out for one months, maybe two, have a shot. 750 is not hard, when you really devote..and now you don't need to think for essays. At least if you reapply next year, GMAT is still there. For other two, quite subjective, really depends on the school's preference and the current admit mix. Alternatively, suggest finding some Yale alumni to write recommendation letters (or simple supporting emails will do)

Thanks for your advice larry0056 For simple emails from alumni, how simple? And would the same go for current student?

Actually, the more complicated, the better. But at least the alumni/student recommender shall know you well, so as they are at a better position to convince the admission office. One convincing/complicated letter will overwhelme three simple letters

Thanks for the great insight! I will bear in mind^^

blemebriller

Strongly recommend retaking GMAT. A high score shows your commitment and efforts to make improvements.

If my memory serves well, last year the average GMAT of Yale accepted students almost hit 730. As a Chinese applicant, compared to the peers, you have less choice to make it through. And it's not hard  as your quantative is way too low. As a Chinese, if you spend some more time, it's all possible to get full score, which allows your to achieve around 730.  Good luck!

Hey there—as a Chinese applicant, (as you likely know) the bar for GMAT scores is higher than that for US citizens.  So if you feel like you do have a shot at raising your GMAT score, you should do so.  Now, if your sense is that you don’t have a great shot at raising the score, then don’t worry about it—it is only worth it if you DO have a good chance at driving that score up.  Since you got a 6.0 on the AWA, Ive gotta believe that if you studied a bit, you COULD get your verbal score up.  That’s what I’d do, if possible.  Hope this helps!

Thank you very much Jon Frank for your advices I would keep your words in mind. I would like to further ask how applicants are divided into country pools. While my ethnicity is Chinese, my nationality is another country. In this case, would I be put in the country pool of China or the other country?

May I also ask your advices on the scope of the essay clarifying career goals and letter of interest confirming my interest in the school? I am a bit confused on how to set the scope to provide new insights to the AdCom on my career goals and why Yale. Many thanks in advance!

I got 700 at the beginning.  finally got 760 after completing all the guidebook Qs.  Of course, managed to understand almost every one.  did not do any other exercise.  So it's very likely to improve your score after 2 to 3 weeks' work.  of course, you need to be serious and confident on it.

don't know if you should reset your goals.  I guess maybe the stories from your goals and other essays/experiences don't match well.  or the goal itself is not clear enough.  better to show your essays to someone for advice.

Many thanks to piscalab and Brightsnow + congratulations to your admission I will bear your advices in mind.

For career goals, I stated that I aim to further develop my current career path. As I did not take business courses during undergraduate and learnt most accounting & finance knowledge on the job / self study, I wanted to return to school to integrate my experience and new knowledge systematically.

However, during my interview, when I was asked what would be the one change I would make if I could live my college life again, I honestly said that I wished I could have been more goal- / career-oriented back then. Then I was later asked what internship I plan to look for if admitted, I slipped... ><  I wonder if this would be a proper new scope to focus on for my essay clarifying career goals?

Best wishes, blemebriller.

CDJJMM, thanks for your advices and congrats to your admission too The example you told is definitely an encouraging one. I will bear in mind; will also pay tons of attention when writing the career goal clarification essay^^
