1)复数 the subject is powers, we should use make. 2)D: as is a preposition here. as a group to modify"letters"
make n1 n2(双宾)---> D: the phrase should be " make the letter(as a group) the rival of .." the rival is n2 E: make his letters a group .. a group is n2
thus the meaning in D and E is different. D emphasizes the "the rival of the best novels of the time",however E emphasizes " a group".

感觉D还是有问题，为什么不是make the letters a group the rivals... 从D的逻辑来看是强调letters，那么相应的rival也应该为复数吧？
