标题: OG 144

144. Efforts to equalize the funds available to school districts, a major goal of education reformers and many states in the 1970’s, has not significantly reduced the gaps existing between the richest and poorest districts.

(A) has not significantly reduced the gaps existing

(B) has not been significant in reducing the gap that exists

(C) has not made a significant reduction in the gap that exists

(D) have not significantly reduced the gap that existsD

(E) have not been significant in a reduction of the gaps existing

In A, B, and C, the singular auxiliary verb has does not agree with the plural subject of the sentence, Efforts. In addition, B and C are wordy; significantly reduced will suffice here. Choice E uses a similarly wordy expression that changes the meaning of the sentence, stating not that the efforts have significantly reduced the gap but that they failed to play a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps. Choice D, the best answer, is grammatically correct, clear, and concise.

黑体字的意思是不是反了?

仔细看了后,发现是有问题,应该是:

ETS没有说错。tianwan再读读。ETS说的是“并不是努力显著缩小了差距not that rhe efforts have significantly reduced the gap,but ----" 是not ---, but----的句式。

谢谢各位NN的回复,但是我没觉得我的理解错:not that...but that...是个多义词组。

1,固定用法:not that...but that...=not because....but because

Not that I don't like the film, but that I have no time for it.

2, not that... but that中的that是not...but... 后接的从句,that不是because的意思。本题的that是宾语从句的先行词。

stating not that the efforts have significantly reduced the gap but that they failed to play a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps.

应该是stating not that the efforts have not significantly reduced the gap but that they failed to play a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps。 即:不是表达了the efforts have not significantly reduced the gap ,而是表达了they failed to play a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps。

而ETS解释的意思反了。请指正。

tianwan的看法是对的,我觉得。
作者: babypace    时间: 2004-6-10 03:11

stating not that A, but that B。I consider that the contents after first "that" is a whole "thing"--->A. A should be "the efforts have significantly reduced the gap", which should be demonstrated in Choice E. However, Choice E misinterpreted the meaning by using "B", which is a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps.

your explanation is "stating not that ~A, but that B。 "not" is already a sign of negative.

I'm not that the person has great impact on business, but that the person played a significant role in doing business.

I'm not that the person has not great impact on business, but that the person played a significant role in doing business.

How do u think about above sentences?

应该是stating not that the efforts have not significantly reduced the gap but that they failed to play a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps。 即:不是表达了the efforts have not significantly reduced the gap ,而是表达了they failed to play a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps。

首先,你加黑体的部分是这个题目正确答案真正想表达的意思。

Choice E uses a similarly wordy expression that changes the meaning of the sentence(选项E用了相似的罗嗦表达,而这种表达改变了句子的意思), stating not that the efforts have significantly reduced the gap([E]表达的不是the efforts大大地缩小了差距)but that they failed to play a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps(而是: they[指the efforts]没有在已经缩小的差距的过程中起到重要作用).

红线部分为正确答案应该要表达的意思,兰线部分是E所表达的意思。

又仔细看了一下,偶觉得确实是ETS写错了,应该是stating not that the efforts have not significantly reduced the gap 。这个红色的underline的not漏了。

stoneren,你的理解可能有问题:

Choice E uses a similarly wordy expression that changes the meaning of the sentence(选项E用了相似的罗嗦表达,而这种表达改变了句子的意思), stating not that the efforts have significantly reduced the gap([E]表达的不是the efforts大大地缩小了差距)but that they failed to play a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps(而是: they[指the efforts]没有在已经缩小的差距的过程中起到重要作用).

你的红字部分清楚表明了你的理解偏差: stating not that the efforts have significantly reduced the gap([E]表达的不是the efforts大大地缩小了差距) 应该是:E没有表达the efforts大大地缩小了差距。

(D) have not significantly reduced the gap that exists是A。

那么E的错误在于stating not A。你把A代入看看这个not能不能省。

For example:

I stated that you are right, not that you are wrong.

or

I stated not that you are wrong but that you are right.

Choice E uses ..., stating not that the efforts have significantly reduced the gap but that they failed to play a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps.

再比较一下看看。

根据对称原则, 超级支持tianwan GG的理解, 真是超级细心, 这个错误太隐蔽了, 难怪ETS自己也很难发现.

stating not that the efforts have significantly reduced the gap but that they(指efforts) failed to play a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps

tianwan GG的the efforts have not significantly reduced the gap 。里的not 对应failed to , 他们都是DE选项中的have not 搞的鬼了.

大概是这样吧, 请指教!

这个大家也要弄清楚?佩服大家的仔细精神.

我做题的时候, 看法和tianwan 一样.想着ETS一定晕了, 然后就跳过去不管它了,

作者: nosmoking    时间: 2004-8-18 11:06

呵呵!我认为stoneren理解正确!                                                                                                                                 我想tianwan之所以坚持的关键点在于认为 “stating not that the efforts have significantly reduced the gap but that they failed to play a significant role in some already-existing reduction of several gaps.”是一个原因状语从句。我个人理解这不过是个伴随情况状语嘛!它只是接着说明一下Choice E所表达的的意思,而不是说明为什么E的表达changes the meaning of the sentence。当然,如果正确理解了E的表达的含义,那么客观上也能理解为什么E是一个逻辑上不正确的选项。

对于tianwan的精神表示钦佩,从ETS的解释中也可以学习语法,呵呵!

作者: wwwweng    时间: 2004-12-24 23:29
分析一下:
A(原题要说的是):have not significantly 。
B(原题相反的是):have  significantly 。
那么E要是表达的意思相反就应该是:没表达A,而表达了B。
解释中说state not that甲but that乙,理解起来应该甲是原题要表达的,乙是不要表达的。
那么甲应该是A喽。
没办法只能用作lsat逻辑的方法看gmat语法解释了。
我还是支持tianwan,ETS是晕头了。

ets是对的,tianwan理解错了
作者: yeehang    时间: 2008-10-26 00:41

tianwan的推理已经十分清楚了

E)的解释:stating not A,but B  表达的不是A,而是B

“A”表示什么?当然表示正确答案所包含的意思咯。

可是现在“A”的意思与正确答案的意思正好相反,显然是漏掉了“not”。
