Although various eighteenth-and nineteenth-century American poets had professed an interest in Native American poetry and had pretended to imitate Native American forms in their own works, until almost 1900, schoolars and critics did not begin seriously to study traditional Native American poetry in native languages.
A until almost 1900, scholars and critics did not begin seriously to study
B  until almost 1900 scholars and critics had not begun seriously studying
C  not until almost 1900 were scholars and critics to begin seriously to study
D  it was not almost until 1900 when scholars and critics began to seriously study
E  it was not until almost 1900 that scholars and critics seriously began studying

c 中begin seriously to study,说awkard and wordy,必须 seriously began studying?

而不是用seriously began to study?

一是,其中含有be to do结构,GMAT中很少用be to do结构,可以参见OG解释,肯定是有说过的;

关于begin to do和begin doing,我之前也研究过,GMAT倾向使用后者

我查了longman字典,没有发现begin to do 和begin doing的区别。

(A) have raised hopes that there is a recovery finally主语单数主谓不一致 there be 表示自然存在的状态
(B) raised hopes for there being a recovery finally主句时态是say 从句…现在时
(C) had raised hopes for a recovery finally being同B 没有过去的时间点支撑从句为过去完成时
(D) has raised hopes that a recovery is finally
(E) raised hopes for a recovery finally主句时态是say 从句…

(A) until almost 1900, scholars and critics did not begin seriously to study until almost 1900,
(B) until almost 1900 scholars and critics had not begun seriously studying1. 同A
(C) not until almost 1900 were scholars and critics to begin seriously to study were to begin --awkward
(D) it was not almost until 1900 when scholars and critics began to seriously study almost 修饰位置不对强调句除了用that就是who 不用when
(E) it was not until almost 1900 that scholars and critics seriously began studying

一般来说,begin to do和begin doing可以互换,但在以下三种情况下,用to do:

It began to rain.

如:begin to know
 believe, wonder, think等。

3. begin本身是ing形式,为避免重复后接to do
 即,beginning to do

----------------------------------
关于C选项,我认为不是LZ所说begin seriously to study的问题,而是to begin seriously to study的问题,原句为倒装句,应先还原顺序再判断,即:
scholars and critics were not to begin seriously to study until almost 1900.
出现了be to do 的结构,但实际上是可以省略的,变为did not begin.
not until almost 1900 did scholars and critics begin seriously to study

C中的错误点不在于seriously的位置问题;因为Manhattan上对adv 做modifiers有如下阐述:adv. modifiers do not need to touch the words they modify” 但副词的修饰位置在句中不能产生歧义;这里无论是seriously放在begin之后还是前面,都来表示开始认真地学习与认真的开始学习没什么句意的差别;
这里的awkard 和wordy应该是说were to do begin to do
C当中的were to do (表示打算做某事) 改变了原文表达的意思;
表达否定2中用法,一种是not until放在句首,要用倒装 ;另外一种是it is not until ...that
