偶选A

A them指代不清B的话事态不多,消失应该在出现之后吧,C VANSHIED开头看也不开错 D前面的of 和后面的of them重复了,其实后面的OF THEM是没必要的,大家看D和E不就差这个吗还有THE当然是特指500种拉肯定要THE的。

As A do, B do.

As A do, B do not...,即前后是相反的。

Over 99 percent of all species (that ever existed) have become extinct

Five hundred million different species of living creatures have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent of them vanishing.

B. Nearly 99 percent of five hundred million different species of living creatures that appeared on Earth have vanished.

E. Of the five hundred million different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent have vanished.

E: the market for recycled commodities, like the commodities of aluminum and other metals, remains... 如果要说后一个commodities修饰前一个commodities而不是market, 连着两个commodities是不是有点重复而且冗余,为什么不说like those of aluminum and...另外是不是把逗号去掉才好? go and buy me some fruits like apples and oranges; 更何况,我觉得这里应该是例举的意思,用such as 更为合理,而且也是ets 的关于like和such as的考点

如:    复数 of 单数, which are....

someone who has a strong natural ability to lead, play music etc
the skill of a born actor

2. born loser
someone who always seems to have bad things happen to them

market, such as aluminum and other metels

allergires such as to milk

这里补出to的原因就是因为allergires不包含mile,不能直接说allergries such as milk。

其实TO前面还省略了an allergry

D. Of five hundred million different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent of them have vanished.

E. Of the five hundred million different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent have vanished.

START TO BE SEEN◀
[intransitive always + adverb/preposition ]to start to be seen, to arrive, or to exist in a place, especially suddenly。

born [only before noun]
1. born leader/musician/teacher etc
someone who has a strong natural ability to lead, play music etc
the skill of a born actor

2. born loser
someone who always seems to have bad things happen to them

3.in all your born days
old-fashioned used to express surprise or annoyance at something that you have never heard about before
In all her born days she had never heard anything like it.

http://dictionary.cambridge.org

born (BEGIN TO EXIST)   [Show phonetics]
adjective
1 be born When a person or animal is born, they come out of their mother's body and start to exist:
She was born in 1950.
We saw a lamb being born.
Diana was born into an aristocratic family.
Ann was born and brought up in Ealing.

2 having started life in a particular way:
The toll of babies born with AIDS is rising.
Stevie Wonder was born blind.

born 2 verb
1be born
when a person or animal is born, they come out of their mother's body or out of an egg
Forty lambs were born this spring.
be born in
Swift was born in 1667.She was born in India, where her father was a British official.
be born at
Then, most babies were born at home.
be born on
I was born on December 15th, 1973.
be born into/to/of something
(=be born in a particular situation, type of family etc) One-third of all children are born into single-parent families.
be born with something
(=have a particular disease, type of character etc since birth) Jenny was born with a small hole in her heart.
I was born and raised (=born and grew up) in Alabama

Usage Note for Born 2
HINT sense 1
Do not say ' I born', 'I have been born', or ' I am born '. Say I was born; He was born in Pakistan.

就说说have appeared跟have vanished这两个时态,

Some buildings that were destroyed and heavily damaged in the earthquake last year were constructed in violation of the city’s building code.

(A) Some buildings that were destroyed and heavily damaged in the earthquake last year were

且一些如all Sth, something, nothing...

99% of the ## species that appeared on earth加了个the,就明白表明出现过的物种是##个,其中99%....

Five hundred million different species of living creatures have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent of them vanishing.

A. Five hundred million different species of living creatures have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent of them vanishing.

B. Nearly 99 percent of five hundred million different species of living creatures that appeared on Earth have vanished.

C. Vanished are nearly 99 percent of the five hundred million different species of living creatures that appeared on Earth.

D. Of five hundred million different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent of them have vanished.

E. Of the five hundred million different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent have vanished.

1,the不可少:

the 500,000,000 different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth,

500,000,000 different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth,没有the,就变成了曾出现在地球的许多种类中的500,000,000种。

B,D与A选项主要的区别不是有没有the,而是more than的位置不同,造成意思不同!

154. In 1791 Robert Carter III, one of the wealthiest plantation owners in Virginia, stunned his family, friends, and neighbors by filing a deed of emancipation, setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property.

(A) setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered
(B) setting free more than the 500 slaves legally considered as
(C) and set free more than 500 slaves, who were legally considered as
(D) and set free more than the 500 slaves who were legally consideredA
(E) and he set free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered as

This sentence requires that the participial phrase setting free... connect to the gerund construction by filing a deed...; it was the filing of a deed that made possible the setting free.... Choices A and B establish this connection, but only A, the best choice, completes the participial phrase appropriately. In choices B and D the misconstructed phrases set[ting] free more than the 500 slaves... mistakenly suggest that Carter set free slaves that were not his own. Choices C and D distort meaning by paralleling stunned and set free, as though these were two separate and independent actions. E begins a second independent clause, which—though grammatically acceptable—again distorts the meaning. In choices B, C, and E, considered as is unidiomatic.

Simple Past: the simple past indicates that an activity or situation begun and ended at a particular time in the past.

Present perfect:the present prefect expresses the idea that something happened ( or never happened) before now, at an unspecified time in the past. The exact time it happened is not important.

If there is a specific mention of time, the simple past is used.

ex: They have moved into a new apartment.

ex: They moved into a new apartment last month.

The market for recycled commodities like aluminum and other metals remainstrong despite economic changes in the recycling industry.
A. commodities like aluminum and other metals remain
B. commodities like those of aluminum and other metals are remaining
C. commodities such as aluminum and other metalsremains
D. commodities, such as aluminum and other metals, remains
E. commodities, like the commodities of aluminum and other metals, remains

Hi,
I'm pretty sure that D is the correct answer.
First, "commodity market" in the sentence refers to raw material market, such as the New York Merchandise Exchange, on which options of all kinds of raw materials, such as aluminum, gold, silver, are traded. So, obviously “such as” is better than “like”.

Second, the clause “such as aluminum and other metals” is a non-restrictive clause modifying commodities, so commas are needed here to separate the non-restrictive clause from the main idea – “the market of commodities remains strong”.

Discussions welcome!

By merging its two publishing divisions, the company will increase their share of the country's $21 billion book market form 6 percent to 10 percent,a market ranging from obscure textbooks to mass-market paperbooks.

A. their share of the country's $21 billion book market form 6 percent to 10 percent,a market ranging
B. from 6 percent to 10 percent its share of the $21 billion book market in the country, which ranges
C. to 10 percent from 6 percent in their share of the $21 billion book market in the country, a market ranging
D. in its share, from 6 percent to 10 percent, of the $21 billion book market in the country, which ranges
E. to 10 percent from 6 percent its share of the country's $21 billion book market, which ranges

B is correct.  First, it’s the market share of the company that’s discussed, obviously “its share” should be used.  So out A, C.  D is out because it’s awkard.  B is better than E because “from ... to ...” is idiomatic, but “to...from...” is not.   The “which” in B is modifying “book market in the country” – and it’s acceptable.

There are no legal limits, as there are for cod and haddock, on the size of the monkfish that can be caught, a circumstance that contributes to their depletion through overfishing.

A.  There are no legal limits, as there are for cod and haddock, on the size of the monkfish that can be caught, a circumstance that contributes to their depletion through overfishing

B. There are no legal limits on the size of monkfish that can be caught, unlike cod or haddock, a circumstance that contributes to depleting them because they are being overfished.

C. There are legal limits on the size of cod and haddock that can be caught, but not for monkfish, which contributes to its depletion through overfishing.

D. Unlike cod and haddock, there are no legal size limits on catching monkfish, which contributes to its depletion by being overfished.

E.  Unlike catching cod and haddock, there are no legal size limits on catching monkfish, contributing to their depletion because they are overfished.

C is correct.  First, the paragraph is discussing monkfish’s depletion, so “its depletion” should be used.  Out A, B (them) E.  In D, “Unlink ..., there are ...” and “being overfished” are both problematic.  So, C stands.  C is not perfect though, “which” in C refers to “no limits for monkfish”.  This is a little different from the typical usage of "which" in GMAT.  But this usage is OK in general English, and in any case it’s a lesser sin than the other choices.

B. Nearly 99 percent of five hundred million different species of living creatures that appeared on Earth have vanished.

E. Of the five hundred million different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent have vanished.

I choose E.  Here “five hundred million different species” is a definite noun phrase, so article “the” must be used in front of it.  Therefore B is out.  In addition, “appeared” in B implies that all the species are all gone now, which is not true.  So E is a better choice.

C. a critique of all chemistry after Robert Boyle and envisioning as wess
D. critiquing all chemistry from Rober Boyle forward and also a vision of
E. critiquing all the chemistry done since Robert Boyle as well as his ownenvisioning of

A is correct.  E is out because it sounds like H.D. was also critiquing “his own envisioing”.  Similarly, D is out because it sounds like HD was also critiquing “a vision of ...” (his own vision).  A is correct because “a critique” and “a vision” is perfectly parallel.  In B, “a critique” and “his envisioining”, and in C, “a critique” and “envisioning” are not parallel.

在LONGMAN Dictionary of Contemporary English里,

commodity:

1.a product that is bought and sold

2.a useful quality or thing
