It is a comparison, the first sentence is "owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults", thus we should look for similarrrrrrrrrr structure in the 2nd sentence.
Clearly E for parallelsim and "as" for comparing two clauses(thus like is wrong) plus we need similarrrrr structure: X is goal of young adults, as it was of earlier generation it 指代X，and two clauses all have a subject and a verb, thus A is wrong again.
