I'd like to offer some comments on "what to do for WL", hopefully this would be beneficial to LZ or other students got WLed.
1. Follow the procedure specified in your WL letter. Talk to your WL manager and provide whatever information they ask for. Find out the "reason" of your WL, background or they have some doubts bcoz of your G / T? Try to fix the "hardware" problems.
2. (If your school did not ban this) Provide updates from the moment you apply till now. New projects? New volunteering services? Visited school? Talked to alumni / student? Write to the school, re-iterate your interests and keep in touch!
3. (If your school did not ban this) Line up alumni and current students to write "letter of support" for you. If you got an alumnus friend or one who's a current student, ask them to write a letter of support to highlight how you are a "perfect match" to the school and how you can contribute to the community. Although this is not weighted as heavily as recommendations, some schools actually take these into account. And in some sense, this is your "turnaround management" skills.
4. All in all, keep the hope. You are already an elite to be in the WL (You must know many strong candidate with solid background had been screened out and never even appeared on the waitlist! You must have done something right!!!
