In one state, all cities and most towns have antismoking ordinances.  A petition entitled “Petition for Statewide Smoking Restriction” is being circulated to voters by campaign workers who ask only, “Do you want to sign a petition for statewide smoking restriction?”  The petition advocates a state law banning smoking in most retail establishments and in government offices that are open to the public.

Which of the following circumstances would make the petition as circulated misleading to voters who understand the proposal as extending the local ordinances statewide?

C The state law would supersede the local antismoking ordinances, which contain stronger bans than the state law does.
E   The state law would not affect existing local ordinances banning smoking in places where the fire authorities have determined that smoking would constitute a fire hazard.

Springfield Fire Commissioner : the vast majority of false fire alarms are prank calls made anonymously from fire alarm boxes on street corners . Since virtually everyone has access to a private telephone , these alarm boxes have outlived their usefulness . Therefore , we propose to remove the boxes . Removing the boxes will reduce the number of prank calls without hampering people’s ability to report a fire>

Which of the following , if true , most strongly supports the claim that the proposal . if carried out , will have the announced effect

A   The fire department traces all alarm calls made from private telephones and records where they came from

B    a telephone call can provide the fire department with more information about the nature and size of a fire than can an alarm placed from an alarm box

(D)
The state law would supersede the local antismoking ordinances, which contain stronger bans than the state law does
(E)
There is considerable sentiment among voters in most areas of the state for restriction of smoking

In rural areas of the state, there are relatively few retail establishment and government offices that are open to the public

The state law would supersede the local antismoking ordinances, which contain stronger bans than the state law does

In one state , all cities and most towns have antismoking ordinance . A petition entitled " petition for statewide smoking restriction" is being circulated to voters by campain workers who ask only . " Do you want to sign a petition for statewide smoking restriction ?" the petition advocates a state law banning smoking in most retail establishments and in government offices that are open to the public .

Which of the following circumstances would make the petitionj as circulated misleading to voters who understand the proposal as extending the local ordinances statewide ?

(A) The state law would not affect existing local ordinances baning smoking in places where the fire authorities have determined that smoking would constitute a fire hazard
(
(D) The state law would supersede the local antismoking ordinances, which contain stronger bans than the state law does

Which of the following circumstances would make the petition as circulated misleading to <voters who understand the proposal as extending the local ordinances statewide >?

Sounds right.

which one makes the petition misleading to voters?

1.Voters understand the petition as extending the local ordinances statewide

2.the petition misleads the voters (the petition is misleading to voters)

3.which one makes the petition mislead them?

The state law would supersede the local antismoking ordinances, which contain stronger bans than the state law does.

To get the answer, we first need to understand the question. We need to know what "proposal as extending the local ordinances statewide" mean. Simply put, it means that the content or body of the ordinances will be retained while the jurisdiction of the ordinances will be expanded to cover the state. One example: if local ordinances forbid smoking in bars in the city, the state law will forbid smoking in bars, statewide.

Now let's look at the choices:

A. I do not think A is correct for one reason: ordinance banning smoking for fire hazard does not constitute anti-smoking ordinances. For exmaple, banning smoking at gas station and banning smoking in hospital are two different stories. When A is true, the petition is not misleading.

B. Irrelevant. Nothing exists to link the two.

C. Irrelevant. We need to focus on what each choice, if valid, will affect the argument. If the argument is about whether the state law will be effective in rural area, C might be relevant. For this particular question, C does not provide any link between the state law and local ordinances. Therefore C is incorrect. For those who picked C, you have to know what GMAT CR is all about first.

D. To me D is the perfect answer. It provides the link between the two. If the state law contains less strict ban than local ordinances, we can conclude that the state law does not encompass all the local ordinances. Apparently the state law does not simply extend the jurisdiction of local ordinances, but change the body of them. Therefore D is correct.

E. No linkage.

Personal opinion only for your reference.

“In one state , all cities and most towns have antismoking ordinance . A petition entitled " petition for statewide smoking restriction" is being circulated to voters by campain workers who ask only . Many thanks all friends above. I got it ! The right answer is D.

Which of the following circumstances would make the petitionj as circulated misleading to voters who understand the proposal as extending the local ordinances statewide ?

Q1: I agree on D.

Answer to tianwan's question: Which of the following circumstances would make (the petitionj as circulated) misleading to voters who understand the proposal as extending the local ordinances statewide ?
