标题: Calling all NYU Stern Fall 2011 applicants
Hello,

I'm a first year MBA student at Stern. Wanted to open a thread for the 2011 Stern applicants to share your experiences along the admissions process. I was in your shoes last year and understand how anxious you all are to hear from the admissions office. Try to be patient if your applicaiton has been under review for a while. It can take over a month to extend an interview invitation or w/l or rejection. The committee might be holding on to your applications and comparing within the pool. Since all interviews are conducted by admissions officers on a rolling basis they are very busy so be patient.

When you receive an interview invitation you can choose to interview on campus or attend the hub interview in China in March. I felt no disadvantage doing the hub interview. Last year 5 out of the 6 students from mainland China were admitted through the hub interview. They understand it's difficult for a lot of international applicants to travel to NY. Admissions decisions can be made within a week after the interview.

It is true very few applicants from mainland China were admitted in the past, but there are many overseas Chinese students. I believe Stern wants to admit more Chinese students in the future but it is still going to be very competitive. The program is great and the students are intelligent, interesting, supportive and very diverse.

Although finance is still Stern's strength (renowned faculty, alumni network) the new dean wants to change Stern's image as a finance focused school by admitting students from various backgrounds and interests. So if you are not interested in Investment Banking or hedge funds, you should be confident and passionate about your career goals.

The first semester is most stressful with all the campus recruiting going on, so be prepared. Stern's location is incomparable, which allows you to visit companies easily. Several mainland Chinese students have received offers from prestigious companies in NY, others in China or HK.

Good luck and look forward to seeing you in NY.

Thanks for taking such a great initiative. I applied for NYU in round 2 and am now anxiously waiting for any news from the school. I am wondering when you received invitation for the March hub interview last year?

arisbj, thanks for sharing.
Do the applicant need to ask ETS or GMAT to send the reports to NYU? I thought self-report is okay?

Hi,arisbj, when did you get your password? I submitted just before the deadline and haven't got mine.

Hi Rob哥,谢谢你的书^_^

虽然我没有申NYU,但是我的朋友kongkong57被waitlist了,你有什么建议么?

Hi, what do u mean by "overseas Chinese students"? Those Chinese nationals who studied and worked overseas? Or those ABCs?

Does stern place big attention on diversified overseas experience?

I will in oct this year, stern is my target school. I met alumni and talked to my colleague who graduated from stern, great program!!!!
作者: arisbj    时间: 2011-1-29 00:20
We do have many Asian or foreign students who grew up or studied and worked in the US before coming to the program. Each year Stern's class is comprised of a large number of international students, and they want to make sure the admitted applicants will both benefit and contribute in such environment. International exposure such as education and working experience will help but not necessary. Stern emphasizes EQ so you may highlight your ability to thrive in diverse cultures and backgrounds, work well with people and being sociable.

Thanks for the post.

I wanna ask something as well. I'm waitlisted without interview, so how much chances do I get? Since I heard it's very rare for candidate from this group to get an offer.

If the application end up not successful this year, will it hurt if I re-apply next year?

Thanks a lot for the help and advices!
作者: arisbj    时间: 2011-1-31 01:04
I can't comment on your chance of getting off the waitlist. Stern does not give a lot of interview invitations but there is still time before the notification deadline. If your application is not successful this year and you are still interested in Stern you should reapply and highlight actions you have taken during the year to improve your candidacy. Good luck!

Many people who have not visited NYU Stern have misconception about the school not having a campus or the students being cold. I want to reassure those who are interested in Stern that its location will provide you with the easiest access to all of your target companies in Manhattan as well as a true New York City experience. The students are also very supportive.

NYU is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, land owners in Manhattan. Most of its schools are located around Washington Square Park, in the Greenwich Village. Stern and the NYU Law school are both relatively independent from the rest of the NYU schools. Stern is in an 11-story building next to the NYU library and the facility is first class. The perk of its being in the Greenwich Village is that you are surrounded by the city life. I believe most people coming to NY don't plan to study in school all the time but enjoy the city, correct? Another famous business school in uptown Manhattan is actually in a building outside of its main campus in Harlem, which will bore you quickly. It's a wise decision to live close to your school and when you live here you'll realize you don't like to travel between uptown and downtown.

I love the Stern location so much that I don't think it needs a campus. New York City is the best campus.

Good luck with your applications!

just curious, when do 2nd round applicants normally hear from Stern? Thx
作者: blemebriller    时间: 2011-2-3 23:23
Dear arisbj, thank you very much for this very informative post! I am a R2 applicant and wonder realistically what the school looks at in evaluating candidates? While I am certain the school evaluates each application on a holistic approach, I am under the impression that it quite focuses on candidate's academic strength (GMAT avg: ~720). I got only 700 on GMAT. Would that be detrimental to my application?
作者: arisbj    时间: 2011-2-4 07:32
To answer blemebriller's question, a GMAT score around the mean is not a deal breaker...it's the whole package. But Stern does receive a lot of applications so given everything else similar, a higher GMAT will put you on a better position. I hope you wrote excellent essays to convince the admissions committee that you will benefit, contribute and succeed by joing Stern. Good luck!

dear airsbj,

Since the school does not have a campus, does everybody just leave after class? how can students in Stern get together and get to know each in depth? how supportive is the school career center? the students and the alumni?

There are corporate events on campus, mentoring and coaching sessions given by the career development office and second year MBAs throughout the entire first semester. You will most likely find yourself in those events after class every day.

There are 6 blocks of 60-70 students each and you will take most of your first semester's classes with them, you will also be assigned a study group of 5 or 6 students or form your own group. There is a two week pre-term before the first semester begins where you network and get to know the 400 students in your class through organized activities. Student groups are also a good way to meet people sharing professional or other interests. Every Thursday evening many students will go to BeerBlast in the basement of the building.

There are many meeting rooms and common areas in the building for group activities, bars and restaurants for student gatherings. It all depends on yourself to mingle and reach out to people and get to know the students around you. We are all adults and we don't need a "gated campus" to keep the students inside to know each other right?

Even though the curriculum and recruiting is a competitive process, students are very supportive and willing to share informations. Again it's up to you to reach out to people and you will be pleasantly surprised how helpful the students are.

The career development office is very strong at Stern. They have established deep relationships with recruiters and provide counseling to students, conduct resume reviews and mock interviews...

I think it's a great community. You will probably not find much time not with the students.

They probably haven't made their decision on your application yet. You should hear from them by Feb 15 and there is still chance to be invited.
作者: wooing    时间: 2011-2-10 09:53
Thanks so much for your prompt reply.

Do you think it's helpful to write to the school about the recent accomplishments that i made in work?
作者: arisbj    时间: 2011-2-10 10:08
Unless it is a significant progress in your career you don't need to update the admissions committee. If you do, make sure to keep it professional and succinct.

Thanks so much for sharing with us the info!

I have an engineering background and is currently working in DC area. Stern is one of my dream B-school. It's really exciting to know that Stern is looking for more diversified background for perspective MBA students. But I'm still a little concerned if I emphasized too much about general management for example as my interest which might not match perfectly with Stern's specialty, it will put myself in a disadvantage situation.

Guess my question is, how do I show my diversified background while appealing to what Stern is looking for?

Thanks again for your kind reply!
作者: arisbj    时间: 2011-2-10 13:33
melody304: Stern does not look for certain applicants profiles. If general management is your interest you should convey that in your essay. The key is to narrow the scope down to specific functional areas, which you could pursue in the short-term (summer internship and post-MBA), and explain why you are interested in doing this, what effort you have made to develop skills required for the transition, and how you will use resources available at Stern in your job search.

Stern has strong alumni base and corporate relationships for general management positions. There are many Stern students who have received summer or full-time offers from leading consulting firms, strategy/business development positions, and management rotational programs in corporations.

Since you live in DC, you should participate in some events hosted by the admissions office to learn more about the program, general management specialization and meet some students.

Thanks so much for your prompt reply, and valuable input. Talking to MBA students will be a great idea, I will look for their DC event and maybe visit Stern some time soon. You definitely have a good point, I need to think through what I really want to do and how the program can help me reach my goal. Many thanks!
