90. Since 1986, when the Department of Labor began to allow investment officers’ fees to be based on how the funds they manage perform, several corporations began paying their investment advisers a small basic fee, with a contract promising higher fees if the managers perform well.

The clause beginning Since 1986... indicates that the practice described in the second clause continued for some period of time after it began. Choice D, the best answer, supplies the present perfect have begun, which conveys this continuity; D also uses a construction that is appropriate when “allow” means “permit”: allow... to be based on. Choices A, B, and E incorrectly use the past tense began rather than the present perfect; furthermore, in each of these options, they has no referent, since officers is a possessive modifier of fees. Choices A and C include the awkward phrase based on how the funds they manage perform. Choices C and E incorrectly use allow that...fees be based.

how the funds they manage perform有问题吗？这一个名词从句看得很顺。

好像考我们阅读或逻辑的时候经常出这种从句来增加难度。

我也觉得这个句子挺不错的。

但是把how the funds they manage perform单拿出来还原成how do the funds they

manage perform?这个句子的意思做为on的宾语，逻辑上似乎不太妥当。

请指正。

这里ETS说它awkward，偶觉得就是不够简洁。所以说还是短语优于从句。

how当conjunction的意思是:a : the way or manner in which *remember how they fought*; also : the state or condition in which b : THAT *told them how he had a situation Charles Dickens*
2 : HOWEVER, AS *a reader can shift his attention how he likes William Empson*

结合how the funds perform,可以看出how做conjunction,侧重讲如何表现,即表现的方式和方法(没有副词how, to what degree or extent的意思),而不象performance,侧重表现的结果

关于这个问题还需深入研究,这些只是我想到的,请大家指教

结合how the funds perform,可以看出how做conjunction,侧重讲如何表现,即表现的方式和方法(没有副词how, to what degree or extent的意思),而不象performance,侧重表现

perform: v.履行，表演

performance: n. 履行，表演，性能，成绩。

本题是用了performance 的成绩一义。

fees 基于他们所管理的资金的业绩，而不是基于他们所管理的资金如何表演。

而且第三个例句正与此题相同，说明经济、企业或者基金均可使用performs well这样的句式，只不过how the funds they manage perform显得awkward，远没有performance of ...简洁清晰

其实我觉得这个不用搞的那么复杂，只要有短语优于从句的意识(就是ETS要求的简洁)就OK了。

觉得mariezhu说的这点很好，但是我觉得这样解释并不符合此题OG解释的本意。因为OG的解释根本就是觉得这里how的用法是awkward的。所以我认为可能这里的考点还是－－短语优于从句。

真郁闷，我也选C的，本觉得how 更能体现题的本意，更能强调perform的结果，但看来ETS 不这么认为呵呵。

我同意perform是有表现的意思！可是这一题用的是名词形式performance. 其实how the funds they manage perform 和 the performance of the funds they manage区别就像之前mariezhu提到的，前者强调的是经理们管理的资金如何表现，重点如何，后者强调的是结果，成绩，不管你是怎么管理的，不管他们怎么表现，只要成绩好就行。根据本题的意思应该是后者强调结果和成绩！

还是awkward

Based on the performance > based on how the funds they manage perform

即使改变为based on how to perform the funds thy manage还是不如一个短语清晰且语法明了

原文的意思, 是要表达fee是取决于基金的绩效(performance); “how to perform the funds they manage＂变成是＂基金如何操作＂, 两者在句意上明显不同

how to...可以是管好了，也可以使管坏了。好像管的手法很高明，但是也会亏钱的

严重同意mariezhu的解释，how the funds they manage perform 强调的是how，侧重的是一种方式

而the performance of the funds they manage侧重的是performance,结果；并且在原文的后半句也明确提到

“with a contract promising higher fees if the managers perform well”

尽管在这两句中perform不是一个含义，但是都侧重基金的结果---收益。

大家看到句子的后一段使用了perform，是这样的if the manager perform well, 其中manager是perfor的主语，而how the funds perform中，fund是perform的主语，而fund本身是不会具有perform的功能的

前辈们的说法百花齐放，但我看得头很大。。。窃以为GMAT不会考量那么细微的词义之差。

貌似我看到了一个更有说服力的点：

fees of investment officers to be based on the performance of the funds (they manage)

从正确选项中，我们可看出fees of investment officers和performance of the funds结构完全平行！

这就是为什么不用how…引导的宾语从句，因为与前面的结构不平行。
