请问GMAT中不定词To + V 的修饰问题？

请问各位网友

以下这句话 I denied John’s efforts to kill the dog

其中的 to kill the dog 到底是形容谁呢？

原句的意思是 I denied John’s effort so that I could kill the dog.

还是 I denied John’s effort so that he couldn’t kill the dog.

语法上两种确实都可以，但是如果此句没有上下文语言环境，我偏向于应该是下面的意思。

因为如果要表达上面的意思：I denied John’s effort so that I could kill the dog.其中的efforts没有修饰成份，没表达清楚是什么东东，个人觉得不妥。

关键要从上下文中理解出effort是什么~~~

要有语境才行...

比如我第一眼看就觉得是I denied John’s effort so that he couldn’t kill the dog.
