the Paleolithic era indicates that an inability to adapt to some environmental change led to their extinction.

答案中的appear为什么用一般现在时，而不用过去时，很明显这个民族已经消失，那么至少应该是过去时，或者过去完成时

appear to 意思是“似乎”，是从现在的角度看的。相当于the evidence shows that the dinosaur was 18 metres tall.
表示这个种族消失用的是不定式 to 后面的have

但是为什么用have been 而不用had been啊？？？他们不是已经在以前就消失了吗？？？应该是过去的过去用appear to had been 啊？？

appear to had been 是错误的表达，to后面只能是动词原形，表示现在和将来用to do,过去用to have done，没有to had done这样的表达。

因为infinitives 的form 只有 present & perfect 两种.
所以不存在为何不用past perfect tense。

看了一圈这题还是没搞明白。。。
我感觉OG的意思是appear to have been表的是过去式，语义上需要的是过去式。
但不明白为什么这里不是过完？是不是OG认为N的条件和他们的消失没有关联，是两个独立的事件。
另，appear as equipped 在这里应该是省略吧，但为什么不能理解成appear as （they were) equipped 表过去呢？
