D Although usually introduces a subordinate clause, but there is no subject of the clause and “having been sighted” is not a complete verb phrase.
不太理解这个解释，have been sighted 这个短语有错吗？

嗯，这点OG解释的前半段也讲了，我不明白的是后半段，就是我标了红色的地方，have been sighted 这个词组有错吗？为什么说它不是完整的动词词组呢？

连词要跟句子，有主谓。having been sighted 是分词结构，不是完整的动词词组，不能做谓语

这句话有动词的：was不是么？
连词一定是加句子的，这个没有问题诶。。。

楼上错大发了...你仔细看看句子结构吧. 这里的was属于定语从句, 修饰rent, 只不过这个定语从句省略了that/which. 这里although的确省略了主谓.
8楼, 别执着了, 你给的题目里面, although下面根本没划线, 没地方投诉啊.

●although省略的情况：although放于句首，主语与主句一致，后面是系动词be+形容词，则主语和系动词可以省略。如：Although young, he plays basketball well.
但比如这道题Although accounting for only 5 percent of the world's population, United States citizens consume 28 percent of its nonrenewable resources, drive more than one-third of its automobiles, and use 21 times more water per capita than Europeans do.
account for应该不是系动词吧没省略...又不符合上面那个省略条件了...........
所以although省略的情况实在很乱糟糟没有定论，还不如从逻辑语义上考虑OG那道题吧：
C、D选项Although从句省略一般感觉although引导的内容不是句子主要意思，而且多作为插入语或句首。但本题原句的逻辑层次表达后半句内容是和前半句同等地位的，即就算用although，although后的内容也是句子主要内容，所以逻辑含义上也不能省略。
个人见解。
