我对答案C没有异议,我的问题是为什么在答案C里用four times as many as there were而不是there was呢?

讲的既是ratio, 也是number of computers, 看后面跟什么,从后面"four times as many as" 看出, 只能比较数量,又因为是there be句型, there were one-quarter as many computers four years ago as there are now, 所以只能用there were.
提问前就看过了,不过还是不明白啊。

there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils,(好像补全了后是there are) four times as many (computers now )as there were four years ago.除非极端情况,四年前只能1台,而现在有四台, 128个学生.但这也太凑巧了.
有这样的一种说法:老外数学不好,又懒得算,于是订下了一条规矩,如果不用计算,单复数一致,such as, there is one computer for, or there are two computers for;如果需要计算不论简单复杂,不管3721一律用复数,such as, four times as many as there were two years ago. Or there are now two computers for each group, two times as many as there are two years ago. 他们到是简单了可难坏数学好的XDJM了。

MM, 如果是ratio能说as many as吗? 而且ratio也不能用there be 句型, 所以比较的只能是电脑数量. "there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils" 是用表达ratio的方式说出了数量, 同时, 因为是表达ratio, 形式上要求用there is, 但不等于后面比较数量时也要用there was. 另外, 用单数形式表达复数含义在英语中并不少见,比如我说:
Many a student is taking gmat.

先看OG的解释[Choices D and E reorder and garble the "one X ..." construction, making four times as many refer illogically to pupils.] 这就是说 four times修饰主句的主语。选项(C) there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were. 主句主语是microcomputer,显然four times 修饰microcomputer,再加之as many as 修饰数量,不可能修饰比率。把(C)后半部分补充完既是 there are microcomputers four times as many as there were four years ago. 前面将比率,后面讲
数量,之所以读起来别扭,是因为我们不适应这种表达习惯。
