首先这一题可以通过排除法做。
A和B选项，fragment，他们使整个句子缺少谓语动词
C:elephant为复数，不可用as much as,而且后面的with的用法不对.with 什么东西domesticated ...blablabla
D:不符合平行结构，AND连接covered和accomendated...后面的WITH结构比起D来说WORDY了
再回答你的问题：
不缺were的，a third of them domesticated and performing various essential tasks.在这句话中做同位语，修饰elephants。
如果加上were，那就是说后面也是一个完整的句子,那么整段话两个动词，但是中间都没有连接词，所以是不能加were的

同位语是gmat中常考的~
我记得老prep破解中说过，就算两个选项都对的话，如果是同位语，优先选这个选项！
