past perfect is used when you want to express the relation between two events in the past, specifying that one occurred before the other. The event in the past perfect occurred before.

In 1713, Alexander Pope began his translation of the Iliad, a work that had taken him seven years to complete

-------a work that had taken him 7 years --------1713 began the translation

If you look at this in time the sentence says that Alexander Pope had completed the work before starting the translation.

你的解释似乎和我的问题无关呀。。我想问的是E项OG为什么说他强调了后者

之所以解释说E项强调了J那个人的评价
是因为原句是说a book that J.....
也就是J那个人的评价是做修饰 a book 的定语从句

而E项 and 后直接连接J.... 的那个句子有和主句并列的嫌疑，此时就变成了着重讲两件事，第一，XX开始翻译一本书，第二，这本书J认为是最好的。。。。

美女，首先排除DE，begin doing永远错；再排除A，,a work that, doing..., and that...乱七八糟的结构；剩下BC，a work that...and that...两个that从句都是修饰同位语work，总体结构BC都对。关键是C用了过去完成时，没有任何证据说要用完成时态，这是一错；后面的pronouce it as中的it是多余的，这是二错。美女，明白了吗？

美女，首先排除DE，begin doing永远错；再排除A，,a work that, doing..., and that...乱七八糟的结构；剩下BC，a work that...and that...两个that从句都是修饰同位语work，总体结构BC都对。关键是C用了过去完成时，没有任何证据说要用完成时态，这是一错；后面的pronouce it as中的it是多余的，这是二错。美女，明白了吗？

DE不是这样排除的吧。OG上是说DE里面，a work incorrectly refers to the Iliad.
因为花了7年时间完成和被SJ评价为最好的翻译的作品是 AP's translation of Iliad，而不是Iliad本身

楼上指出的前一个错误是E最大的硬伤:即便不考虑began doing的问题，E中的it只能指代Iliad(荷马史诗的那个)，而愿意是指Alexander Pope 的译本耗时7年，并被Samuel Johnson评为最棒的翻译。

至于lz提出的那个inapproriate emphasis on J's description,我个人理解主要是因为将一个同位语中2个并列的限定性定语从句中的一个改为了与主句并列的结构。说的具体些:
愿意是“Alexander Pope 于1713年开始了对<伊利亚特>的翻译——一项耗时7年，被J评为最出色的翻译的工程.” 这里"耗时7年"、"被J评为最棒翻译"都是用来修饰AP的翻译的同位语"a work that ...and that..."的一部分，而E把其中一部分凌驾在另一部分("耗时7年")之上甚至去和主句并列，是不太合适的。

但是这么分析实际做题时不太现实，至少我要是每题都这么看肯定做不完，所以有前面那个硬伤已经足够了，而后面这个问题的做题切入点是同位语a work that..and that...这个是GMAC偏好的同位语+并列结构，其他选项有这个结构的因为句式工整、结构清晰，可以优先考虑。

BTW，我说的太罗嗦结果忘了，楼上后面那个it多余的错误应该是指C，因为C的从句有先行词做pronounce的宾语了。E中用and直接和主句并列，Pronounce没有先行词，不能省it，所以这里不是错误点。

LZ的疑问我刚刚也有。。后来查了一下，发现OG12里另外一题也是类似的情况就是43题

Laos has a land area about the same as Great Britain but only 4 million in population, where many

其中的D选项，OG也说后面部分的"and many "是undue emphasis，查网上讨论帖说是原来many的那部分是一个非限制性从句，现在变成了和主句平行的成分，所以句子中心发生了改变

同理，这道题中，E选项and后面那部分原来是两个从句中的一个，用来共同修饰a work，而在E选项中变成了和主句Alexander Pope beban his translation平行的结构了，所以句子中心发生了改变

个人愚见。。
