偶对选C没有疑问, 但偶怎么也搞不清为什么four times as many as后面是there WERE
There IS ONE computer for every 32 pupils , 4 time as many as there WERE. 这是怎样的一个比较的结构呢? there were 和谁对应呢?

我个人的意见是:
there is 是表达每32个人一台,单位数字;而there were是表示所有机子,是集体概念。两者之间没有绝对平行,所以,“four times as many as there were”前面加了一个“,”,伴随说明:总体数量的大小。
不知其他NN有没有更精辟的论断。
我本人也没有办法,只能每天看它一眼,直到有一天能背下来,毕竟这是人家的语言。
用there were的原因是因为不知道后面接的是单数还是复数,当不知道是单数还是复数时,就要用复数。
在举个简单的例子,
The student who failed the class should call ----- (his,her,their)parents。因为不知道这个学生的性别就要用复数their。
