If achieved, this would place an enormous burden on resources, lowering the quality of life for everyone

Faced with the dilemma that more population would need more resources and hence heavier burden on the environment, whether extending average life span is a right choice. My view is that improved average life span is not controversial to resources. The whole society could improve human life span and have high quality of life for everyone.
Admittedly, with over 6 billion population in the world, the earth has been stretched more and more for resources than ever before. Water shortage, energy scarcity, global warming are all signs that we are stepping into an era that the demand for resources are somewhat hard to make both ends met. And the population is growing every day. In a few seconds like a blink, the world is welcoming thousands babies at every corner on the planet. Improved life span means more population in the world at the same time, which no doubt would aggravate the resources burden. Then concern over resources availability to feed the whole human being for a reasonably fair good life is looming.
However, as common sense and observation tell that it is not the improved human life span that leads to the resources burden. Switzerland and other Northern European countries have the longest life span in the world, with the people there enjoying best life quality. On the contrary, Africa, one of the poorest continents, has the shortest life span, but most people there live just meager life. And we also noted there are lots of places where both the environment is conserved well and people’s life span is long. On the premise of higher technology, more sustainable production method, and more efficient management, not only improved life span won’t bring further burden to resources, but also it would help conserve resources to a great extent. Just imagine how much pharmaceutical and social efforts are expended and wasted when people’s life are threatened.
Furthermore, the technology is developing all the time. With technology improvements, human being can improve the lifespan and at the same time live a dignified life. Centuries ago, people use firewood as energy resources, then we have electricity coming and it greatly released the burden on forests. Now scientists are working on other sources of energy such as nuclear energy, wind power, solar power, etc. Technology actually knows no bound. So the life span and resources are not either-or choices. We can have both.
Summed all the discussion above, though we as human beings are facing more severe challenges from environment and resources everyday, the improved life span is a right choice to enable everyone live a better life with the help from advanced technology and more friendly conservative interaction with environment.
