Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion sated above. Support your views with reports and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
Admittedly, since the very advent, science and technology have been playing irreplaceable roles in human being’s lives and become more and more essential in modern society. And nobody can deny that the world can not run without science and technology even only for one second. Nevertheless, the importance of science and technology can never necessarily mean that schools should devote more time on teaching science and technology and less to teaching arts and humanities. In fact, in modern materialism environment, school students’ learning on arts and other humanity disciplines should be strengthened in order to cultivate their recognition of some invaluable qualities, such as loyalty, rightness and bravery.
First of all, it’s the humanity and art disciplines which help the students to shape their moral judgment criteria and which teach the students to realize what is right and what is wrong. If the whole society takes negligible attitudes towards the education on arts and humanity, students’ recognition on loyalty, honesty and fairness, etc., which a civilized society is based on, will be distorted and wrong-directed. Consequently, the society will sooner or later suffer from the potential harm planted in the schools. Science and technologies help humans to enjoy more convenient lives but can also render disasters to human beings if they are wrongly used. A genius scientist can develop an atomic bomb, using his scientific minds, and throw it to the crowded cities if the scientist lacks enough humanity education and hates the world and people. A talented computer engineer can break into a country’s bank systems, using his technologies, and destroy the whole financial systems if the engineer believes money is the root of evils.
Secondly, education on arts and humanity subjects can provide assistance to people’s learning on science and technology. An obvious example is that special arts, such as music and paintings, can motivate scientists and engineers to initiate new ideas for research. Albert Einstein, known as the greatest scientist in the twentieth century, was fond of playing pianos and left himself in music to get the inspiration. Science and technologies are rigid and sometimes boring for students to learn and need arts subjects to modulate the teaching and studying process.
Last but not least, arts and humanity subjects are the main models for civilization and culture to continue and develop. A harmonious society needs not only outstanding scientist and engineers to maintain the material civilization, but also writers, painters and musicians to develop the spiritual civilization and culture. We can not imagine a world full of irons and steels but lack of songs and paintings. A society needs arts to console people and to eliminate harmful desires. Therefore, our schools are due to give enough emphasis on arts and humanity subjects to make sure enough artists are cultivated for the future.
Under the materialism environment after the Industry Revolution, it’s impossible for the schools to share equal emphasis on science and technology education and humanity education. However, things need changes and no human being can afford the lost of arts.作者: fengshou 时间: 2010-8-10 10:38
