正确答案是E. 前边的cut into...可以理解，但that从句除了啰嗦外，语法没有错误。而E改变了原文的时态。were arising改成了arose. 所以选了A原句。不知道大家是怎么理解的？在语句啰嗦和时态变化中，到底应该更重视哪个？OG的解释也基本上是说原句啰嗦，E更简洁，但却没有提及时态的转换。

that 从句肯定是要用过去式，至于具体是过去进行时还是一般过去是，从逻辑上理解，没有太明显的错误。所以这个先放一边。
然后从句子的简洁性来讲：
E： The first trenches cut into a 500-acre site 明显比The first trenches that were cut into a 500-acre site简洁。还有，evidence +that 从句比较常见。

多读几遍，从语感上也能读出区别。

至于that 从句
A的evidence for ... 不对，另外最后的一个that 可指代Middle East，有歧义
B的yields单复数不对

没有with 正好是simulaneously but indenpently 小平行结构吗 of the more 作状语？

楼上，平行不是看形式上的对称。

这里的平行结构是arise (simultaneously with) but (independently of).

后面the more celebrated city-states是宾语。

2楼说的，cut在这里用的是过去分词表被动，而cut的过去式、过去分词都是跟原形一样的。
5楼说的，你说的平行结构是不对的。我们不能说A arose simultaneously of B，只能说A arose simultaneously with B。
同理，不能说A arose independently with B,只能说A arose independently of B。
那这时如果要使两种描述并列，唯一的办法就是：
A arose simultaneously with but independently of B.
=A arose simultaneously with B.But A arose independently of B.

simultaneously搭配介词with，independent搭配介词of +N
这两个介词都是属于跟随副词的固定搭配，而不是和arise一起的固定搭配。
