In some species of cricket, the number of chirps per minute used by the male for attracting females rise and fall in accordance with the surrounding temperature, and they can in fact serve as an approximate thermometer.

为什么E不对呢？

1. "possibly" has a different meaning from "can"
2. it is "the number of chirps xxx" that "serve" xxx, not the action of "rises and falls"

我觉得用现在分词，意思上也是可以的，但是现在分词是句子的简化形式，他在某些简单情况下可用，并不是所有的句子都适合简化为现在分词形式，像本例，还要表达can，或者possible的情态动词，就不适合简化为分词结构了

I would take E) it were written as "possibly serving".
In addition, "in fact possibly serving" is awkward and change the original meaning.
