试着解释一下
查了好几部字典，inhabit by 就是inhabit的被动用法，跟其他可以被动的动词一样，被。。。居住，被。。。使用，就是用by连接后面的动作主体。
inhabit with没有被动的意思，这是inhabit是主动语态，inhabit前就要有动作主体，A inhabits with B, 就是A与B居住于（栖息于）的意思。
原句中表示沙漠被好多物种栖居着，被动的意思，所以是inhabit by喽。
二者貌似没有什么直接联系。。。
