No, some first tier ibanking firms only recruit qualified PhD candidates to their research department. Besides, the PhD(Finance) graduated from the top US universities can earn over $200,000 p.a. That's why so many talented Chinese, who has already completed their Phd in Physics or Maths,  will choose to pursue the second PhD in Finance. The bad news is, because so many potential PhD applicants have exceptional merits such as having got a PhD with strong quantitative subject, that it makes the PhD application even more difficult....

haha, Biz PHD is totally different from Math, Physics PHD. The higher the school ranks, the bigger the difference it is. Many people know a PHD here and there, but few knows it is all about supply and demand.

In Biz and law field, a professor's salary is for decoration(they are the highest paid professors anyway), that is to pay regular bills. The major money is made out of school. Same applies to very famous Math and Physics Professors as well. But in law and Biz, it is much easier, because you don't rely on national research fundings that much.

In Berkeley, we have a professor making 1.5 million a year, but he still teaches, because the professor title is one of the keys why he made so much money. And he is not even a famous professor.

Funnytiger,

For PhD in accounting, besides being a faculty, what else can they do at the same time? As you said, for finance professors, they can do consulting for companies. How about accounting professors?

the objetive of phd program is to train researchers and teachers.

Funnytiger, I have the same question as XiaoxiaoYY.

an average accounting professor at Haas does indpendent consulting on tax and accounting issues. for example, IRS auditted a company in San francisco and pointed out that the company is faking its tax return. usually the company will hire independent consultant to prove that they are clean. the hiring rate is from 200.00 per hour to 500.00 per hour depends on the company's size. In some other cases, there are different accounting make-over for balance sheet as well. Many of these accounting professors are partners in big accounting firms

Funnytiger, I know I can always count on you! Many thanks!

actually working off campus is not just Biz and Law professor's privilige. many top schools' physics, math, EE, ME professors work off campus as well.  I know a chinese physics professor here in bay area who sits on two boards of venture capital and he has his own company. The annual income for him is just a little bit below 1 million.

again, may I remind you that all these cases are professors in high ranking schools. Professors in the lower ranked schools have lower income from outside. and, to become a professor requires a lot of hard work, it is really "Zhe Shou"

Funnytiger, thanks for your kind reminder! I doubt if I'm a very persistent person. Have to wait to see!

Right now, I have four paths: MSA-->Top Four-->Top MBA; MSF-->IBanking-->Top MBA; MSA-->hD in accounting; MSF-->hD in Finance; I have to reconsider my previous MSF choice since the weak economic market. If u say following your heart, honestly however, I never take any finance/accounting course in US school, I can't tell which I like better. Hard decision! But the date is coming soon! Sigh....

Freegirl, the emotional icons you use are really cute!

From the questions you asked, I can see that we are in the same boat. I am also in the situation of switching career path, but right now, it's only change of major. I also have the same idea of either working in one of the four accounting firms after MAc for several years, then top MBA or continuing PhD in accounting to be a Professor later. In our school's situation, assitant professor in accounting earns more than that in finance. It's good, although brain-racking to think of these things now, but as long as we have a goal, work hard for it, then it's enough. Sometimes, you can't think too much. Just as the old saying goes, "change is faster than plan". But it doesn't suggest that we don't need a plan. As long as we have tried our best to reach our goal, don't care too much about results. A lot of things have been predetermined. Things are meant to happen in certain ways. This is my way of living.

Let's work hard for our goals.

Funnytiger GG or JJ, thank you for answering questions!

Love your post! xiaoxiaoYY! So when are you going to start your accounting major?

作者: lesliejy    时间: 2004-4-24 16:36

It depends on your career interests. If you wannat to pursue academic and research based career, you should choose Phd, just choose one of the Finance and Accounting then do it. Otherwise, you may targeting at the master degree, which could boost up your professional career in fields such as ibanking or accounting firm.
