主句的主语是scholars，如果加了一个and，那么说明主句是有两个并列的句子组成，那么，D中的这个he，指代的应该是scholars，这样的话，不管是从逻辑上说还是单复数上来看都是不对的

As official answer explains,D has breaked the rule of "Run-On" since in Gmat "and",without a "," put forward,is a signal of paralleism,which needs 2 ojects analogous to be put on both sides of "and".In D there is nothing but "scholars" can be analogous to "he",a person.That is why it gets wrong:he can not refer to scholars in terms of inconsistence of a single with a plural,as LS states.
But there is one exception:when ",and" together appears,2 single sentences can be used as you though.That is,the mere difference that determines whether this sentence faults in Run-on is whether there exists a "," before "and". If "," and "and" had joined together,the sentence would not have had a Run-On then.

还有，是不是and连接2个句子前面必须要有逗号？
