Two works published in 1984 demonstrate
contrasting approaches to writing the history of
United States women. Buel and Buel’s biography of
Mary Fish (1736–1818) makes little effort to place
her story in the context of recent historiography on
women. Lebsock, meanwhile, attempts not only to
write the history of women in one southern
community, but also to redirect two decades of
historiographical debate as to whether women
gained or lost status in the nineteenth century as
compared with the eighteenth century. Although
both books offer the reader the opportunity to
assess this controversy regarding women’s status,
only Lebsock’s deals with it directly. She examines
several different aspects of women’s status, helping
to refine and resolve the issues. She concludes that
while women gained autonomy in some areas,
especially in the private sphere, they lost it in many
aspects of the economic sphere. More importantly,
she shows that the debate itself depends on frame
of reference: in many respects, women lost power
in relation to men, for example, as certain jobs
(delivering babies, supervising schools) were taken
over by men. Yet women also gained power in
comparison with their previous status, owning a
higher proportion of real estate, for example. In
contrast, Buel and Buel’s biography provides ample
raw material for questioning the myth, fostered by
some historians, of a colonial golden age in the
eighteenth century but does not give the reader
much guidance in analyzing the controversy over
women’s status.

这题我觉要理解原文“in contrast”，“相反”指的是什么。如果我没有理解错的话，这里应该是指与lebsock的作品相比，b的作品是有更多充裕的材料去质疑那个被某些历史学家关心的谬论。也就是说b的作品比l的作品有更多的材料。

lz标出的那个In contrary表示的转折是整句的后半段：but does not give the reader much guidance in analyzing the controversy over women’s status. 因此这道题并不需要考虑这个转折关系。

还是不明白，谁能说下C选项的解释是什么意思。。。

The final paragraph of the passage describes Buel and Buel’s work as providing material that calls into question claims that the eighteenth century was especially favorable to women.

原文说Buel质疑myth,fostered by some historians,of a colonial golden age. C选项说colonial era 并不像some historians认为的那样对女人有利，是对原句的一种改写，所以选C

糊里糊涂的懂了也做对了，但是不懂myth怎么就代表women's status了？

我开始也很不明白，选错了答案，因为也想和Lebsock的观点进行取反，后来简单化这个问题，也许它的要点就在"colonial golden age", 而正是Buel and Buel’s biography质疑一些historians支持说colonial age对women来说是"golden"age的观点，所以B and B's book认为colonial era不会被wowen认为是favorable。
