The following appeared in a letter from a part-owner of a small retail clothing chain to her business partner: “Commercial real estate prices have been rising steadily in the Sandida Heights neighborhood for several years, while the prices in the adjacent neighborhood of Palm Grove have remained the same. It seems obvious, then, that a retail space in Sandida Heights must now be much more expensive than a similar space in Palm Grove, which was not the case several years ago. So, it appears that retail spaces in Sandida Heights are now overpriced relative to those in Palm Grove. Therefore, it would be in our financial interest to purchase a retail space in Palm Grove rather than in Sandida Heights.” Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.
To begin with, the most unpersuasive reasoning is to believe that price of a retail space inSandida Heights can represent the prices of all the retail spaces. Every retail space may own its special price, which perhaps depends on the population and economic development, and one of retail spaces has nothing to do with another. It is possible that a retail space with convenient transportation own a higher price than the one that is poor in its traffic development. If this is the case, the claim that price of a retail space inSandida Heights can represent the prices of all the retail spaces is ill founded.
In the second place, a part-owner of a small retail clothing chain unfairly assumes that it is a profitable approach to purchase a retail space in Palm Grove. While Price of chain is a seemingly important element in determining profit, it is hardly the only required factor. This assumption overlooks other critical criteria in determining the profit such as the clothing cost, the transportation fee and marketing gimmicks, and it is possible that choosing Sandida Heights are much more beneficial to the retail clothing chain than choosing Palm Grove because of some elements mentioned before. Therefore, without accounting for these potential factors, the author concludes too hastily that it would be in our financial interest to purchase a retail space in Palm Grove rather than in Sandida Heights.
