Less than 是一个副词词组。

D错：the number is less than one-quarter the amount， number less than amount？

只有A找不到错误。

其实这题我也是在A和C之间犹豫。关键在于这个less than 可以修饰population, sales, dollars 等等。fewer than 是有的，虽然不是很多。

这个fewer than one-quarter of that number 看着让人觉得不塌实。

有没有人有比较肯定的解释？

     理由是两个：the number 和4000对应

     其他的我觉得意思都不对啊，there are ...那里存在。。。的数字/量的四分之一

是不是less than 修饰不可数名词，fewer than修饰不可数名词？less 和fewer都是few的比较级，最高级分别为least和fewest。楼上的，我开始也觉得选D，但是句子前面提到的不是number，而是there are 4000 (drive-ins) existed,只不过把数词后的名词省略了。后面的分句应与前面对称，仍然用there are fewer than...我是这样认为的，看还有高手们愿意批评指正否？

我的想法跟2045977MM一样，觉得是省略了there are，所以就剩了B和C，第一感觉B读起来非常顺，但是C的语法结构好像又比较正轨，犹豫了半天还是选了C

有了一个新想法，不知道对不对？

大家迷惑的焦点主要在于：画线部分到底是省略的一个实意名词，还是一个虚指的数量。如果是实意的名词肯定fewer 好。如果是指一个数量好像应该是less than 比较idiomatic. 如果从OG 对there be 句型的分析看，好像应该看成实意名词的省略，而不是数量。总不能说there are 多少多少数量吧。这样看是不是C好一点呢？

不敢确定，继续讨论。

理由如下：1 there are 后接复数形式，less只修饰不可数名词，fewer可以修饰可数名词，some 4000对应的是drive-ins，为可数应该用复数，故ADE不对。 2 此题从意思上理解，one-quater of that number中的number指代4000，用many不合适，因此C最好。

另外，此题老管给的答案是C

我觉得也是D。

one-quater the amount是正确的形式。同样的形式如twice the amount, twice the price等等在GMAT中一直出现，却从没有twice of the amount。因此推断one-quater of that number反而是错的。

同时，number为什么不能用less？请给出具体例子。

C存在比较对象不一致的问题。 there are fewer (drive-ins) than the number，drive-ins和number比较，错误。

请指教！

看了LONGMAN上的几个词解释：

4 any amount of something used to say that there is plenty of something, and no more is needed:

The school has any amount of resources and equipment.

amount可修饰可数名词

that3 S1 W2 [+ adjective/adverb]

1 spoken used to say how big, how much etc, especially when you are showing the size, amount etc with your hands:

It was quite a large fish - about that long.

He missed hitting the car in front by that much.

that many前不能直接加名词，需要介词

few S1 W1 comparative fewer, superlative fewest

1 [no comparative] a small number of things or people
a few
I have to buy a few things at the supermarket.

Pam called to say she's going to be a few minutes late.

There were a few people sitting at the back of the hall.

There are a few more things I'd like to discuss.

fewer修饰可数名词就ok

综合起来看就选C，其他都有问题

这题我选(B), 思路如下

首先，some 4,000 (drive-ins) existed in the United States... 此处的主语应该是省略掉的drive-ins，而不是4,000;这一点逻辑上来说应该是很明显的，而却一个数字/amount(4,000)不能existed in the United States...然后，如果后半句要用there are的话，应该也是省略了drive-ins，(B) there are fewer than one-quarter as many (drive-ins). 这样语法上是没有问题的。

关于其他选项：(A)、(E)很明显。(C)无法带入省略的drive-ins. (D) number/数字是不能和amount/数量比的；an amount of 4,000 cars, an amount of 4,000 dollars, 而不是an amount of 4,000.

关于比较级和as ... 不能同时使用的rule,嘿嘿，我从来是不认同这种rule的（类似的还有rather than/instead of) - ETS可能有自己的倾向，但我还是坚持具体情况具体分析。比如说，单独的说There are fewer than as many as 4,000 students 显然是啰嗦冗余；但是结合上下文，School A has 4,000 students, and school B has fewer than half as many.　就很合适啊。

最后，这道题里，如果选项Ａ用的是fewer而不是less,我认为也是正确的。

ps. 最后一招，大家google一下"fewer than a quarter(half) as many"吧。

恩，同一个意思有多种不同的表达方式，我被convince了，只有C才能作为语法正确的答案。D虽然形式很好，但有致命错误。

不记得在OG的哪儿看到的了，就说there are的指代比较模糊，所以还是the number好，有没有of省略这么一说的？
