1. Once positioned in space, the Hubble Space Telescope will capture light from sources twenty times fainter compared to those that can be detected by ground-based instruments.

(A) compared to those that can be detected

(B) compared to those they can detect

(D) than those that can be detected

(E) than those detecting

答案是D，觉得those用在这里没道理啊，难道指代light？

fainter要求用than,sources要求用those. 答案是D。

Sources (are) twenty times fainter than those that can be detectedby ground-based instruments. those指向sources.

小雪MM一定是把比较对象看成是light了吧. 如果这样C从语法上是不对的

than+比较对象(can be detected)只能作为定语, 但是这里的先行词呢??所以语法上不对

为什么说C没有先行词呐？还没有明白

不行，有情态动词的定从不能省略

我觉得以上的理论用在这里不妥。

(E) than those detecting

如果改成以上的形式，D还是对的。因为虽然它少了can，意思上有所变化，变为“被发现的”（有can 是“可能会被发现的”），但是所有选项比较起来，D选项，还是对的。

所以，我认为：并不是A选项中有can，答案选项中必定有can

请讨论。

THOSE表示的是光源即SOURCES 所以只有D正确

严格地说应该是情态的意思不能省略，当然在定从里的情态意思也一样不能省略。

OG93可以作为一个参考，用情态动词迅速排除B/C/D选项，答案是E。

觉得这题有点问题，是不是“light”后面漏了个“s”呀？

light from sources 讲得通吗？能翻译成——来自不同光源的（同一，这里注意单数）光线？

打个比方， a friend from different countries 很搞笑吧？
