标题: which one to chose?

UIUC is a not bad choice, since UIUC has a strong alumni network in Greater China, FYI

Personal opinions                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             1) a lot people in CD got better offers (of course they will turn down offers from UIUC), 2) visa might be another issue, otherwise, UIUC is a good    value school!!

RICE

Johnsonwxj,     it's a hard choice, just like I need to make a decision between Rice and the other 3 b-schools. At present, I    lean to Rice, for its Finance program and the location. Compare the ranking and career issue, still lean to Rice.

For visa issue, personally, I think these two school probably no difference if    no scholarship.

Anybody who will go to Rice this fall can contact me!

Rice is better, better job opportunity

Although I have decide to choose Rice for its location, small size and good at finance, but seeing the 2005 US NEWS BS ranking, Rice drops to 45, while UIUC climb to 25, what is hell of this ranking change???

Now I am very frustrate about the choice again, is it right to spend 100K$ on a school ranking 45????

It is really a tough choice, maybe I should try better school next year again although I am over 30 years old already?

Anyone have some valuable suggestion will be appreciate!!!

UIUC is not a bad choice. I will prefer UIUC to Rice.

Does that ranking matter that much? if you are in USA, you will not find much difference between 25 and 40.

MBA students over 30 years old is very common. don't scare at the age.

Thanks, if we do not concern about the ranking, then why do u think UIUC is better than Rice.

For me, I want to concentrate in Finance, and want to stay in US several years before come back!

Here are some considerations about these two schools,

UIUC:  better ranking, strength in Accounting, near Chicago, more international students, and low tuition.

Rice: famous in Texas, strength in Finance, located in Houston, little international students, and low living cost.

Still have no answer, maybe I will give up these two, and try next year.

Pursue a top mba degree is one of my dream for a long time, however, after taking GMAT test three times, still not over 700, I does not apply those top program.

Since the two programs are not top and do not give me any scholarship, I have to consider more about the value of my investment.

A GMAT below 700 does not nessary means that you can not get in a top program.

I am sure top program will  not reject u solely for your poor GMAT,as long as other aspects of your applicaiton are strong!

yes. I agree with lucky forever. I take gmat three times, not over 700. but I choose a school suitable for me. although it is not top MBA.

don't think top mba reject you for not very competitive gmat score.

you can be admitted to uiuc and rice, I am sure that you have the chance to win wharton and duke if you have  proven acomplishment in career and great potential in creating the success in the future.

Hey, Dude,
I think I have known you for a while. I read both of you posts at here and on BW.
To be honest, if what matters you most is the job, go Houston.
The location of Rice is much better than UIUC. it is the common sense that you can take big advantage on the location if both of the schools are not ivy schools (personally, I would rank Rice much higher that UIUC on their MBA programs.)
About the rankings, I think the reason that rice dropped deeply this year was related to its low gmat score. But think about that, every top school can keep its average gamt about 730+ if they want. In that way, Chinese and Indians will dominate in the class. Don’t you think it is ironic? Usnews uses the data which represents one year’s performance. That’s not accurate.
I prefer to go to a school having less internationals if I want to improve my English communication skills which is extremely important for a Chinese mba. You will find out it maybe turn out to be a negative factor for you if you always get assist from your Chinese peers.
In addition, UIUC is a state univ. vs rice is a fine private school for rich kids. You will tell the different if you get a chance to visit both schools.
I wish you can get out of the dilemma early.

Hi, Luyiut, really thank u for your inputs!

Actually, in my heart I also consider that Rice is a more suitable choice for me although it is more expensive. The recent US News ranking seams a test for me, and let me consider more about the school that I truly want to go.

Now I have made the final decision that I will choose Rice no matter what its ranking change in only a few years. I will not regret once I have made the choice and I will use time to focus Visa and English capability, cause we all know that spoken and written English is sometimes much important than anything else for a Chinese who want to find job in US.

Anyway thank u all valuable suggestions, I really found this forum very very helpful for me; I learn a lot from all of your guys, I would like to help others if they have any needs!!!
