Can you please share what you think was the most important element that helped you getting admitted?
Strong essay, unique work experience, strong Recommendations, legacy, or the big named undergraduate institute?

My background seems similar to yours, but I am contemplating whether I should apply Standford R2 or try to apply for a easier school.

Personal opinion, a strong set of Essays is critical.

Applicants need to show the uniqueness through the stories. By uniqueness I didn't mean a super special work experience (which I don't have) or extremely high GPA/GMAT/TOFEL (which I don't have either), but the strong will and passion. Preparing for Stanford essays is also like a self-reflection process, so I'd say it definately worth trying!

The essays help the school know "who you are" (I know it sounds like cliche, but after I went through the whole process, I believe it is true!), where you're coming from-your background and past experiences lead to who you are today, and your inner-drive & personality.

From the interview I also felt the same way- Stanford DO care about the 'stories', your personal stories. Therefore my recommendation is- think carefully of 2~3 stories that best represent you and your characters/strengths, show your passion, and be yourself!
